BYU Quarterback Facing Suspension Over Honor Code Violation, Not Necessarily Assault Allegation

PROVO, UT – BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff is bracing for a seven-game suspension from the university following an honor code violation, stemming from a sexual assault allegation made against him, according to reports. However, the impending suspension appears to be related to a violation of BYU’s strict honor code regarding premarital sex, rather than the assault claim itself.
Retzlaff, a graduate student with one year of eligibility remaining, reportedly intends to transfer [[2]]. He has denied the allegation made in a lawsuit filed in May,claiming the sexual encounter was consensual [[1]].
BYU, run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints, enforces a strict honor code prohibiting premarital sex and requiring students to “live a chaste and virtuous life.” This code applies to all students, regardless of religious affiliation [[1]].
This isn’t the first time an athlete has faced consequences for honor code violations at BYU. NFL running back Jamaal Williams missed an entire season in 2015 due to a similar infraction [[1]].
The lawsuit alleges that Retzlaff sexually assaulted a woman, identified as Jane Doe A.G., in his home in 2023. Further details of the allegation are currently under investigation.
