Lebanese-Israeli Border Bombing Continues, Diplomatic Meetings Held – Latest Updates

(CNN) – On Thursday, the bombing continued along the Lebanese-Israeli border, while Lebanese officials spent the day in meetings with their foreign counterparts from France and Britain about the growing conflict between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah.

Hezbollah claimed that it carried out simultaneous attacks targeting multiple “barracks” in northern Israel.

On the other hand, the Israeli army told CNN that it had monitored nearly 20 launches, on Thursday, targeting Kiryat Shmona, a municipality in northern Israel that had been the target of Hezbollah strikes over the past few days.

The municipality claimed that two anti-tank missiles were fired at the town earlier in the day.

Hezbollah carried out 6 direct missile strikes on Kiryat Shmona on Wednesday.

Diplomatically, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron in Beirut on Thursday, and also spoke with French Foreign and European Affairs Minister Catherine Colonna about an invitation to discuss the escalating clashes in southern Lebanon and northern Israel.

Mikati called for exerting “maximum pressure to stop the Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon” during his meeting with Cameron, according to what the Lebanese government published on social media.

“Escalating the conflict in Gaza into Lebanon, the Red Sea, or across the wider region will increase the very high level of danger and insecurity in the world,” Cameron said in a post on the “X” platform.

The fighting is among various incidents involving Iran and its proxies that have raised global fears that the Israeli war in Gaza could expand and turn into a larger regional conflict.

As the threat of further violence between Hezbollah and Israel increases, evidence is emerging of increasing tensions on the ground in Lebanon.

On Thursday, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) called on the Lebanese authorities to conduct an investigation after an attack on a patrol, and the United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon said, on the “X” platform, that the attack “was carried out by a group of young men.” In the southern city of Taybeh, it resulted in the injury of a peacekeeper and damage to a vehicle.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to Visit Israel and Middle East Amid Conflict with Hamas

(CNN) — An Israeli official told CNN that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is expected to travel to Israel and the Middle East region next week to discuss the next steps in the war between Israel and Hamas.

CNN has contacted the US State Department for comment.

Blinken’s expected trip comes after senior officials in the US administration met with Ron Dermer, who is considered a close associate of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, regarding the next phase of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, on Tuesday evening.

Dermer, a member of the Israeli Defense Cabinet and former ambassador to the United States, left the White House more than 4 hours after his meeting with Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

A White House official told CNN that the discussions covered “the transition to a different phase of the war aimed at maximizing focus on high-value Hamas targets, steps to improve the humanitarian situation and reduce harm to civilians, and – securing the release of the remaining hostages, as well as planning for the future.” Gaza after the conflict.

Israeli Official: US and Israel United in Desire to End Hamas

(CNN) — A senior Israeli official told CNN that “although there are differences” between the United States and Israel over the war in Gaza, both countries “want to see an end to Hamas.”

Mark Regev, a senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, added: “We can have different discussions on this or that tactical issue.”

He continued: “We listen very carefully to everything Washington says, and I think they listen very carefully to everything we tell them, but in the end, we are on the same side of this. We want to see Hamas destroyed.”

Ron Dermer, considered one of Netanyahu’s closest confidantes, is expected to meet with officials from the White House and US State Department on Tuesday to discuss the next phase of the war in Gaza, CNN reported.

These meetings come at a time when the United States is looking forward to Israel moving away from the war it has been waging for nearly 3 months in Gaza.

Regev said it was “only a matter of time before Israel wins in northern Gaza,” because “reconstruction in the Strip cannot take place until Hamas is eliminated.”

Hamas and Islamic Jihad reject Egyptian proposal to end Gaza war, CNN reports

(CNN) – Reuters reported, citing two Egyptian security sources, that the Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements rejected a plan proposed by Egypt to end the war in the Gaza Strip.

Reuters said that two officials from Hamas and Islamic Jihad denied the information provided by Egyptian sources.

CNN foreign policy analyst Barak Ravid said, “The Egyptian proposal relates to the release of all Israeli hostages from Gaza as well as Palestinians from Israeli prisons, Hamas relinquishing power and establishing a technocratic government in Gaza.”

CNN did not independently obtain a copy of the plan.

Reuters reported that Egyptian sources said that “Hamas and Islamic Jihad refused to make any concessions other than the possibility of releasing more hostages who were taken during the October 7 attack.”

Izzat Al-Rishq, a member of the Hamas political bureau, said in a statement that the movement had no information about the Reuters report, and added: “We reaffirm that there cannot be negotiations without a comprehensive cessation of aggression.”

He continued: “The Hamas leadership seeks a permanent cessation of aggression and massacres against our people, which wants to see this aggression stopped completely, and does not want to wait for a temporary or partial truce for a short period, after which aggression and terrorism will return.”

CNN contacted Egyptian officials to comment on the aforementioned plan.

Israel offers to halt war for a week to return hostages from Gaza, including elderly and sick

(CNN) – Israel’s latest proposal to Hamas is to halt the war for a week in order to return about 35 hostages, including the remaining women, the elderly, the wounded and the sick, held in Gaza, a senior US official told CNN.

This group of hostages includes the three elderly men who were kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz near the Gaza border and who recently appeared in a video released by the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, demanding their release.

CNN was unable to independently verify the date or location of the footage or the condition of the prisoners in the Qassam video.

The senior US official declined to say whether Yahya Sinwar, the supreme leader of Hamas in Gaza, had responded to the latest Israeli proposal regarding the hostages (Sinwar is Israel’s main target in Gaza, and the Israeli military has described him as a “dead man walking”).

Israeli and American officials indicated that they believe that Sinwar may be present in the tunnel network located under his hometown of Khan Yunis.

While Israel returned to the negotiating table to obtain more hostages held in Gaza, Israeli and American officials made clear that a deal did not appear imminent, CNN previously reported.

Father of Hostage Killed in Gaza Blames Netanyahu for “Cowardice”

Father of Hostage Killed in Gaza Blames Netanyahu for “Cowardice”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 21, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

(CNN) — The father of one of the hostages killed by Israeli forces inside Gaza accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “cowardice for not calling him or visiting him to offer his condolences.”

The statements of Avi Shimrez, Alon’s 26-year-old father, came to Israel’s Channel 13 after new details were revealed about how his son and two other men were killed. He said: “The prime minister does not dare to make a phone call. He did not call and will not come here,” in comparison to Defense Minister Yoav Galant, whom he said he called twice.

On Wednesday, Netanyahu visited the mother of one of the dead hostages, Iris Haim, who lost her son Yotam in the same incident.

Shimrez expressed his deep frustration when he learned that Israeli soldiers were able to kill the Hamas fighters who were holding the three hostages and come close to collecting intelligence that could have saved them. He said: “This shows the extent of the mistake. There is a serious mistake.”

He continued: “The shooter should not have opened fire, and if he was a real fighter, he should have known that you only pull the trigger when you are sure that he is a terrorist.”

He said that “the commanders failed to inform the soldiers about the possible presence of hostages in the area,” and added that “photos of the hostages should have been distributed so that the soldiers could identify them,” but he acknowledged that the forces in the field were facing “difficult circumstances.”

He stated: “I cannot file a complaint with our forces because they faced different situations where Hamas tried to ambush them and they suffered losses.”
