UNRWA Commissioner-General highlights urgent need for goods to prevent famine in Gaza Strip

(CNN)– On Saturday, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, issued a statement in which he highlighted the conflicts facing both sides of the war in the Gaza Strip, and the need for goods to prevent a coming famine in the Strip, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the war. .

Lazzarini said: “It has been 100 days since the start of the devastating war, which resulted in the killing and displacement of people in Gaza, following the horrific attacks carried out by Hamas and other groups against people in Israel.” He added: “It has been 100 days of ordeal and anxiety for the hostages and their families.” “.

The Commissioner-General spoke about the difficulties facing the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, saying: “The crisis in Gaza is a man-made disaster exacerbated by inhumane language and the use of food, water and fuel as tools of war.”
He stated: “Humanitarian aid alone will not be enough to stop the looming famine. The flow of commercial goods must also be allowed.”

Lazzarini also added about how the winter and lack of resources affected the conditions of Gazans who were part of the “mass exodus” in the area and that UNRWA facilities needed to be protected in order to “provide the protection that civilians are looking for.”

He continued: “Despite repeated calls, a humanitarian ceasefire is still not in place to stop the killing of people in Gaza and enable the safe delivery of food, medicine, water and shelter,” and said, “The arrival of winter makes life unbearable, especially for those living in the open.” .

The Commissioner-General stated that more than 1.4 million people lack food and hygiene in UNRWA’s “overcrowded and unsanitary” shelters. “For the people of Gaza, the past 100 days have felt like 100 years… It is time to restore the value of human life,” Lazzarini said.

US Secretary of State discusses humanitarian needs in Gaza with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 9, 2024

(CNN) – US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said, on Monday, via the “X” platform, that he discussed with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in the winter camp in Al-Ula Governorate in Saudi Arabia, “the importance of urgently responding to the humanitarian needs in Gaza, and preventing further attacks.” Spread of conflict.

According to the official Saudi News Agency (SPA), the two sides exchanged views on “developments in the regional and international situation, especially the events in Gaza and its environs, and efforts regarding them.”

The Saudi Crown Prince stressed “the importance of stopping military operations (in Gaza), intensifying more efforts at the humanitarian level, and working to create conditions for the return of stability and restoring the path of peace to ensure that the Palestinian people obtain their legitimate rights and achieve just and lasting peace,” according to SPA.

The US Secretary of State said in a press conference in Saudi Arabia before going to Israel that he discussed normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia during a meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince.

The possibility of Saudi Arabia joining the so-called “Abraham Accords” was a major goal of the Biden administration before the October 7 attacks, and officials said at the time that some progress had been made.

Blinken added at the press conference: “There is a clear interest here in continuing” normalization, and he continued: “There is a clear interest in the region in pursuing this, but that will require ending the conflict in Gaza and it will also clearly require that there be a practical path to the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

He continued: “This is what I heard from everyone we talked to about this topic. But the interest is there. It is real.”

Antony Blinken later stated, via “X”: “Even when we focus on immediate goals, we must also work to achieve lasting peace and security,” and added: “The United States has a vision for a regional approach that provides permanent security for Israel and a state for the Palestinian people.”

He continued: “This conflict must not expand. We condemn the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea – one of the busiest trade lanes – which led to the disruption or diversion of approximately 20% of global shipping, and this increases the cost and time of transporting food, fuel, medicine and humanitarian aid.” .

(CNN) – Israel claimed responsibility for the killing of a senior leader in the Lebanese Hezbollah group, Wissam Tawil, according to Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, in an interview with Israeli Channel 14, on Monday.

A Lebanese security source confirmed to CNN that Tawil, a senior commander in Hezbollah’s Radwan Brigade, was killed in an Israeli drone strike on his car in southern Lebanon.

Katz said in the interview: “As for the strike in southern Lebanon, we have taken responsibility, and this is part of our war,” and added: “We are targeting Hezbollah elements and the infrastructure and systems they were able to put in place to deter Israel.”

He continued: “We are making them pay the price. We did not set our goal to thwart 150,000 missiles. We set a goal to restore security to the residents of the north and south and to the State of Israel.”

The Israeli Foreign Minister also reiterated that his country did not claim responsibility for the explosion that occurred last week in southern Beirut, which led to the killing of Saleh Al-Arouri, deputy head of the Hamas political bureau.

It is noteworthy that “Hezbollah” issued a statement, which was reported by the Lebanese National News Agency and the party’s “Al-Manar” channel, in which it said: “With greater pride and dignity, the Islamic Resistance Celebrates the Martyr, Mujahid Commander Wissam Hassan Tawil (Hajj Jawad) from the town of Khirbet Salam in southern Lebanon. He rose as a martyr on the road to Jerusalem,” the statement stated.

Earlier, Monday, the Israeli army spokesman, Avichay Adraee, said in a post on his account on the “X” platform, previously Twitter, that “Israeli warplanes raided Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure inside Lebanon, in addition to military sites from which the organization’s saboteurs operated.” The terrorist, and a short while ago, an anti-armor shell was fired towards the city of Kiryat Shmona, where the forces are responding towards areas in southern Lebanon.”

Netanyahu and Hochstein discuss plans to ease tensions on Israel-Lebanon border

(CNN) – On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a meeting with Amos Hochstein, the special envoy of US President Joe Biden, in Tel Aviv.

During the meeting, Netanyahu said that Israel is committed to bringing about a “fundamental change” on its border with Lebanon, so that displaced residents from areas close to Israel’s border with Lebanon can return to their homes, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Amos Hochstein, Special Presidential Coordinator for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security, has been tasked with helping ease tensions between Israel and Lebanon.

The statement added that the Prime Minister informed the envoy that “the return of our citizens in the north and south to their homes is part of the goals of the war and will be achieved politically or militarily.”

The American envoy also met with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Defense Cabinet member Benny Gantz on Thursday.

Galant told Al-Mabouth that Israel needs a “new security reality” on its northern border with Lebanon, according to the Israeli government.

The Minister of Defense spoke of his country’s determination to change the security reality in northern Israel, to enable more than 80,000 displaced Israelis to return to their homes.

Gantz said: “Israel is ready to work closely with the United States and the international community to reach a diplomatic solution, but if a solution is not found, the Israeli army will remove the threat.”

Although the war is intense in Gaza, there have been almost constant skirmishes between Israel and Hezbollah, the armed group that dominates southern Lebanon, since the Hamas attack on October 7.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken begins a trip to the Middle East, where the risk of a regional war looms.

Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir’s Response to US Criticism of Gaza Resettlement Calls

(CNN) – The right-wing Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, responded to the US State Department’s criticism of his statements calling for the resettlement of Gaza residents outside the Strip.

This came in a post published by the Minister of National Security on his page on the X platform (formerly Twitter), where he said, on Tuesday: “I greatly appreciate the United States of America, but with all due respect, we are not just another star on the American flag.”

Ben Gvir described the United States as a “good friend” of Israel, adding: “But first and foremost we will do what is good for the State of Israel,” stressing that “the migration of hundreds of thousands from Gaza” will allow Israeli settlers to return and “live in safety.”

Ben Gvir, along with Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, presented this proposal earlier this week.

Smotrich called on Palestinian residents to leave the Gaza Strip to make way for Israelis who could “make the desert flourish,” according to Reuters, and Ben Gvir expressed his support for the resettlement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip abroad, declaring that the war represents “an opportunity to focus on encouraging the migration of Gazans.” During a political meeting.

Earlier Tuesday, US State Department spokesman Matt Miller said that “such statements do not reflect the policy of the Israeli government,” and described them as “inflammatory and irresponsible.”

US Administration Bypasses Congress to Approve $150 Million Military Equipment Sale to Israel

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 30, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

(CNN) – For the second time this month, the US administration bypassed Congress to approve the sale of $150 million worth of military equipment to Israel.

A US State Department spokesman said on Friday that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken informed Congress that he had taken an emergency decision to immediately approve the sale of 155 mm M107 rifles and related equipment to Israel.

He added: “Given the urgency of Israel’s defense needs, the Secretary informed Congress that he exercised his delegated authority to designate an existing state of emergency that required immediate approval.”

Additional items were added to previous sales, “bringing the total value of the sale to $147.5 million,” the spokesperson continued.

Earlier this month, the US administration rushed to sell thousands of munitions to Israel, bypassing the usual twenty-day period given to congressional committees to review such a sale.

The US State Department sent an emergency announcement to the oversight committees in Congress that more than 13,000 tank shells would be delivered to Israel without any “further information, details, or guarantees.”

A US State Department spokesperson said at the time: “We remain clear with the government of Israel that it must adhere to international humanitarian law and take every possible step to avoid harm to civilians.”

The $106 million deal was part of a larger order to sell a total of 45,000 tank shells to Israel.
