Vienna, Austria – Iran is sharply criticizingโค European powers as theyโ move toward reimposing sanctions over its โnuclear program,โ a โขmove likely to escalate tensions ahead of a forthcoming United Nations vote. The escalating dispute centers on Iran’s compliance with the 2015 Joint Comprehensiveโ Plan of Action โฃ(JCPOA), โalso known as the Iran nuclear deal.
Britain, โคFrance, and Germany – collectively knownโ as the E3 – initiatedโ a 30-day โคprocess in โlate August to reinstate sanctions unless Tehran โmeets their demands. The E3 areโฃ invoking โคaโ dispute mechanism within โthe 2015โค Treaty โon the Non-Proliferation โof Nuclear Weapons (NPT) that allows for the application ofโค sanctions under a “snapback mechanism.”
Iranian officials accuse the E3 of politicallyโ motivated misuse of the mechanism. “What Europeans areโค doing is politically biased andโค politically motivatedโฆ Theyโ are wrong on different levels by trying to misuse the mechanism embedded โขin theโค Joint Comprehensive Planโ of Action (JCPOA),” stated Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh.
Theโ Europeans had offered to delay the snapback for upโข to sixโ months if Iran restored access for UN nuclear inspectors and engaged in โtalks with the United States. However,Frenchโค President Emmanuel Macron indicated on Thursday that sanctions reinstatement is โprobable, citing aโ lack of seriousโข engagement from iran in negotiations.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi โcountered that Tehran has presented aโ “reasonable and โactionable plan”โฃ and reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to the NPT. Khatibzadeh warned that “all options are on the tableโข if diplomacy fails,” addingโ thatโ European actions are increasing unpredictability and โpotential risks.
The JCPOA, originally signed by Iran, the US, โฃChina, Russia, and the EU, saw Iran agree to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The agreement began to unravel in 2018 when โthen-US Presidentโฃ Donald Trump withdrew from the deal and reimposed unilateral โขsanctions.
Tensions further heightened earlier thisโฃ summer with a 12-day conflict involving Israel, during which Israeli and โUS forces reportedlyโฃ struck several Iranian nuclear facilities. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sparked controversy โin Tehran by stating, “This is dirty work that Israel is doing for all of โus.”
Iranian officials have also voiced criticism ofโ the International โAtomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for โขalleging iranian noncomplianceโข with โits nuclear โขobligations prior to the attacks. Iran maintains it is not seeking nuclear weapons, while Israel is widely believed to possess an undeclared nuclear arsenal.
