UN Security Council Set to Vote onโฃ Trump‘s Gaza Plan November 17
The UN โขsecurity Council is scheduled to vote on November 17th on a resolution regarding a peace plan for Gaza proposed by U.S.Presidentโฃ Donald Trump, diplomatsโฃ have confirmed. The planโ follows a ceasefire in the two-year war โคbetweenโฃ Israel adnโ Hamasโฃ and aims toโ endorse โคMr.Trump’sโค proposal.
A draft of the resolution, reviewed byโ AFP on Thursday, “welcomes the establishment of the Board of Peace,” a transitional governing body for Gaza โขthat Mr. trump would theoretically chair, wiht a โคmandate extending until the end of 2027.
The resolution โwould authorize member states to form a โ”temporary Internationalโ Stabilization Force (ISF)” to collaborate โฃwith Israel, egypt, and newly trained palestinian police โin securing โborder areas and demilitarizing the Gaza Strip.Notably, this latest draft includes a mention of aโฃ possible future โคPalestinianโค state – a departure from previous versions.
The United โขStates, alongside several Arabโ and Muslim-majority nations – Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan, and Tรผrkiye – issued a joint statement on โFriday calling for โthe Security โCouncil to swiftlyโฃ adopt the resolution. They expressed their “joint support” for the measure โand โคurged itsโข “swift adoption.”
However, a competing draft resolution has been circulated by Russia. This version welcomes “the initiative that led to the ceasefire” but does not authorize the creation of a board of Peace or the immediate deployment of an international force in โGaza. It also omits any mention of Mr. Trump, instead requesting that the UN Secretary-General submit a report addressing โคthe potential deployment of anโ international stabilization force.
The United States has characterized the current ceasefire as “fragile” โand cautioned against the risks of failing to adopt its draft resolution. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mikeโ Waltz, wrote in Theโ Washingtonโค Post โค on friday, โ”Any refusal to โฃback this โresolutionโค is a vote either forโค the continued reign of Hamas terrorists or for the return toโค war with โฃIsrael, condemning the โคregion and its peopleโ to perpetual conflict.” He further stated, “Every departure from โขthis pathโฆwill come with a โขreal human cost.”
While Council members have generally supported the principles of theโข peace plan, diplomatic sources have raised concerns regarding the U.S. text. These concerns includeโข the lack of a monitoringโค mechanism by the Council, the role of the โขPalestinian Authority, and specifics regarding the ISF’s mandate.
The Russian UN mission stated that its alternative proposal differs byโ recognizing the principle of a “two-State solution for โคthe Israeli-Palestinian settlement,” a provision they claim wasโฃ not adequatelyโค addressed in the U.S. draft.
