Gaza City – Despite theโฃ ongoing โคceasefire โbetween Israel and Hamas, the Israel Defense Forces โข(IDF) launched an airstrike in the central Gaza โคStripโ on Saturday, targeting a suspected Islamic Jihad militant. The United States has stated the strikeโค does notโข constituteโ a violation of the agreement, โคciting โIsrael’s right to self-defense in the face of imminent threats.
The current ceasefire, brokered with the assistance of the US, Qatar, and Egypt, hinges โขon the complete release of all surviving hostages โheld by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners โheldโฃ by Israel. While Hamas hasโ released all 20 living hostages, the handover of remains has lagged. โOnly 15 ofโ 28โ hostage bodies required for release under the โinitial phase of โthe agreement-whichโ began October 10-have beenโ returned. Hamas attributes the delay to difficulties locating bodies buried under rubble from Israeliโค airstrikes.
According to the IDF,โข the Saturday strike targeted an โislamic Jihad operative planning an imminent attackโ againstโ Israeli troops in the Nuseirat area.Following the strike,Al-Awda Hospital inโค Gaza reported receiving โคfour injured individuals, allegedly โafter a civilian vehicle was hit. โ
Senator Marco Rubioโ emphasized that โIsrael retains theโค right to โact against imminentโ threats, a position supported by all mediators involvedโ in โฃthe ceasefire negotiations. He โalso stressed the importanceโฃ of Hamas accelerating the repatriation of the bodies โคof hostages who died in โdetention. The โcontinuation of โthe ceasefire depends โขon both partiesโ fulfilling their obligations under the agreement.
