Chicago Marathon Runnerโ Completes Race Months Afterโค Stage IV Lung Cancer Diagnosis
CHICAGO – โค Kevin Humphrey of Chicago completed the Chicago Marathon onโ November 5, 2025, just months afterโ receiving a Stage IV โlung cancer diagnosis. Theโข 40-year-old father of two ran the 26.2-mile โraceโ with his sons cheering him on,a โฃtestamentโข to hisโข resilienceโ and determinationโ in the face of โฃa life-altering illness.
Humphrey initially dismissedโ a persistentโฃ cough as aโฃ minor annoyance, but further investigation revealed a far more serious condition. Diagnosed with Stage IV non-small cell lung cancer in โขApril 2025, Humphrey underwent aggressive treatment while simultaneously training for the marathon.โ His story highlights the frequently โฃenough-subtle initial symptoms of lung cancer and the โimportance of early detection, โeven in non-smokers. Lung cancer remainsโข the leading cause ofโ cancer death โคin both menโฃ and women in the United โฃStates, according to โขtheโฃ Americanโ Cancer Society, with aโ five-year survival rate โฃof only 25% โคwhen diagnosed at stage IV.โข
“It โคwas a really scary time,”โค Humphreyโ shared with CBS โขNews. “but Iโฃ knew I neededโ to โstay positive, not just โฃfor myself, butโ for my boys.” He continued โtraining โthroughout chemotherapy, adjusting his โworkouts as needed and leaning on theโ support of his family and friends.
