Berlin – โ CDU parliamentary group leaderโ Jens Spahn โhasโฃ demanded that AfDโ party leader โAlice Weidel address mounting allegations โฃof espionage on behalf of Russia, characterizing โขthe suspicion โคas “serious.” Spahn’s call for clarification comes amid accusations that the โright-wing extremist party is abusing parliamentary โinquiry rights to gather intelligence on germany’s critical infrastructure.
The controversy stems from concerns raised by Thuringia’s Interior Ministerโข George Maier, who alleges theโข AfD is deliberately using parliamentary questions to obtain information regardingโ sensitive areas like energy supply, transportation, and police resources. According to Maier, Thuringia alone hasโฃ seen 47 such requests in the lastโฃ twelve months.โ Several federal and state security experts share these concerns.
“the suspicionโ of spying for the ex-KGBโข spy Putin โin the Bundestag is serious,” Spahn toldโค the “Rheinische Post,” โคreferencing Kremlinโ boss Vladimir Putin’s past with the Soviet intelligence agency. He continued, stating that โif parliamentary rightsโฃ areโ “abused to provideโข foreignโข dictatorsโ with security-related information, it โฃis a betrayal of our fatherland.” โSpahn cited numerousโ incidents within the AfD as evidence โขof the party’s “proximityโ to Putin.”
Berndโ Baumann, theโฃ AfD parliamentary group’s firstโ managing director, dismissed the allegations asโข “crazyโข suspicions,” claiming the inquiries are motivated by theโ perceived โdeterioration of German โinfrastructure under SPD and โคCDU governance.
The accusations arrive as Russiaโค continues its warโ of aggression against โUkraine, launched in 2022, โand recall Putin’s earlier career with the KGB, including a period stationed in Dresden during the GDR era.
