Title: Trump’s Trade Talks Stall with South Korea Over Investment Demands

Trump Seeks $350 Billion Investment from South korea Amidst‍ Trade Deal Uncertainty

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – ‌President Donald Trump arrived in South Korea on Wednesday seeking a considerable $350 ‍billion investment from ‍the nation, but a comprehensive trade deal remained elusive as he ⁢addressed immigration concerns and⁢ geopolitical tensions ‌during his visit. The push ⁢for investment ⁤comes as the U.S. and South‌ Korea navigate complex economic and ⁢security interests, ⁢with Trump signaling a willingness to address visa ⁤programs to facilitate skilled labor access for American industrial projects.

While a formal trade agreement didn’t materialize upon⁢ his arrival, Trump highlighted⁤ an agreement reached‌ in early October allowing South‌ Korean workers to ⁣enter the U.S. on‌ short-term visas or through the ⁤visa waiver program to support construction at industrial sites.⁣ he stated, “I was opposed to getting them out,” and suggested improvements to the visa system could streamline the ‍process for companies seeking skilled workers. This move underscores the management’s focus on bolstering domestic manufacturing and infrastructure growth.

The President’s trip⁣ also includes anticipated discussions with Chinese leader Xi jinping, where both sides have ⁣indicated ‌a desire ⁢to de-escalate ‍trade disputes.Trump told ⁢reporters aboard Air Force One he anticipates lowering tariffs on China related to ‌the flow of ⁤fentanyl ‌ingredients, stating, ‍”They’ll be doing what they can do,” and ⁣”China is going to be working with me.”

Despite hopes for ‍a diplomatic breakthrough, prospects ‍for a meeting⁢ with ⁣North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appear dim.Trump acknowledged a tight schedule prevented an extension ⁢of his stay, and North Korea has dismissed recent overtures from Washington and Seoul, demanding ‍the ⁢U.S. abandon its denuclearization requirements.Pyongyang demonstrated its military ⁣capabilities Wednesday by firing sea-to-surface⁤ cruise⁢ missiles into its western waters, a move Trump downplayed, noting, “he’s been launching ‍missiles for decades, right?”

Previous meetings between ⁤Trump and Kim during his first term⁢ did not ⁢yield a lasting agreement regarding North Korea’s nuclear program. The visit continues as the U.S. ‌seeks to strengthen alliances⁢ and address pressing economic and ⁤security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

Title: US-China Aim for Limited Breakthrough Amidst Trade Tensions

U.S. and China Signal Potential‌ Trade Breakthroughs Amid Ongoing Tensions

WASHINGTON – The United‍ States and China are exploring ⁢potential agreements ‌to address trade friction surrounding fentanyl precursor chemicals, rare earth elements, and agricultural⁣ tariffs, according to statements made Sunday and recent reports. While basic economic disagreements ⁤remain, ‍initial discussions have yielded‌ commitments from China to ⁢curb the flow⁣ of ⁤chemicals used ‍in fentanyl production, raising the possibility of reduced U.S. tariffs.

In February, former President Trump imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, later doubled, to pressure Beijing to halt the export‍ of fentanyl-related chemicals. For months, China has sought a resolution to these ⁣tariffs, expressing frustration over a lack of⁣ progress in negotiations.A senior Chinese public⁤ security official previously ‌attended ‍trade talks without a corresponding U.S. representative.

Chinese officials have also pointed to ⁣steps‍ taken during the ⁤last year ⁢of the Biden administration to combat drug trafficking, arguing these efforts haven’t been acknowledged by the Trump⁤ administration. They have further expressed confusion regarding specific‍ U.S. demands. In response, ‍China levied tariffs of ⁣10% or 15% on ⁤U.S. farm goods,⁤ including soybeans.

According to a statement by a U.S. official, recent discussions with China have resulted⁣ in preliminary agreements to restrict the ⁤export of precursor ⁣chemicals, fueling optimism that the U.S. may consider reducing the fentanyl tariffs.

Despite these potential breakthroughs, important challenges persist.⁣ China is attempting to revitalize it’s economy, hampered by a housing market downturn, by increasing factory output and exporting low-priced goods. The U.S. and other developed nations are determined to prevent this overcapacity from undermining their own⁣ industrial bases.

“we can’t decouple,” stated a⁢ U.S. expert. “There are ‌things ⁢that ⁢we both‌ need ‍from each other… If⁣ you continue ⁢trying to damage the other side ‍with no end in sight, then both sides die the death of‍ a thousand cuts.” The ⁤expert ⁢suggested a ‌strategy of ‍”tactically trying to remove friction – basically slapping on band⁢ aids without⁢ ever ‍curing the disease.”

The U.S. ⁣official, ‌Bessent, stated Sunday that “there have ‌been no,‍ no changes in our export controls.”

Mexico-US Trade Talks Extended Amid Tariff Concerns

Mexico and ‌U.S. Extend Trade Deadline as Talks ‌Continue

Mexico City - mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and former U.S. President Donald Trump⁣ have agreed ⁣to extend a trade deadline for “a few more weeks” to allow continued discussions on outstanding issues, Sheinbaum announced Monday. The ⁣extension averts a potential increase in tariffs ⁢on ⁣some Mexican goods.

The U.S. had previously agreed in July to⁢ pause a planned increase in⁤ tariffs – from 25 percent to 30 ⁢percent – for 90 days while negotiations progressed toward a new‌ trade deal. That pause was set‍ to expire this week. Sheinbaum stated she spoke with ⁤Trump on Saturday and⁣ that both leaders agreed it was crucial to maintain dialog while their teams‍ work to resolve 54 identified trade barriers.

“I was interested in making sure November ⁣1 didn’t arrive without us having communicated and that we were in⁣ agreement that our teams were still working,” Sheinbaum‍ said during her regular morning press conference. “We’re practically closing this ‌issue.”

Following the proclamation,‌ Mexico’s peso ⁢strengthened 0.29 percent to 18.38 per⁣ US dollar.

Mexico has largely avoided notable tariffs ⁣under⁢ the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which is scheduled for review next year. Sheinbaum expressed confidence earlier in October⁢ that Mexico would reach a favorable trade agreement with ‌the U.S., highlighting planned advancements in ‌projects related to electric vehicles, semiconductors, satellites, drones, and artificial intelligence.

“we continue working, and there is no situation in the near future where there could be any special tariff on ⁢November 1st,” ‌Sheinbaum affirmed.

The announcement comes after Trump last week ended trade talks with Canada, citing frustrations with the negotiation process. When questioned about a potential separate negotiation between Mexico and Canada, Sheinbaum cautioned against speculation, stating, “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ⁣ – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emerged from a meeting‌ with former U.S. President Donald⁢ Trump expressing optimism about the future of trade relations between the two countries, despite recent political turmoil in Brazil. Lula ⁢underscored the economic importance of‌ the partnership, noting brazil’s⁢ significant trade surplus with the U.S. and dismissing any connection between the ‌domestic legal proceedings against his ‌predecessor and ongoing trade negotiations.

The meeting took place ‌as Lula attended summits hosted by the ⁣Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Kuala Lumpur. Brazil maintained a⁣ $6.8 billion trade surplus with the ⁣U.S. in 2023, ⁤according to the U.S. Census Bureau,⁣ making it one of three Group of 20 nations with⁣ wich the U.S.‍ enjoys a trade surplus. He also offered to mediate the ongoing crisis in Venezuela, where President ‌Nicolás‌ Maduro has accused the U.S. of escalating tensions.

US-China Trade Talks Show Progress Ahead of Trump-Xi Meeting

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – ⁤ Recent‌ trade⁢ negotiations between the United States and China have yielded significant progress, increasing optimism for a potential ‌de-escalation of the trade⁢ war when Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping meet for⁣ the frist time as ‌2019.

Following a ‌weekend of talks held on ‍the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, officials from both countries announced a‍ “framework” for discussion. US Secretary of the Treasury‍ Scott Bessent indicated the framework would be the basis for talks between Trump and Xi at the APEC summit in‌ Gyeongju, South Korea, scheduled for Thursday.

Bessent expressed expectations that an‌ agreement could be reached‍ to prevent China from implementing threatened export controls on rare earths‌ and avert⁣ a 100 percent tariff on chinese goods proposed by President Trump.he also stated ‍that Beijing had committed to‍ “substantial” purchases of ⁢US agricultural products, a move expected to‍ benefit American ‍soybean farmers.

Chinese vice Premier He Lifeng, Beijing’s lead trade negotiator, ⁣confirmed the progress, ‍stating the sides ‍had reached “a basic consensus” on addressing each other’s concerns and agreed to finalize ‌details and pursue domestic approval processes. This details was released via a statement⁣ from China’s Ministry ‍of Commerce.

The positive developments spurred a surge in Asian ‍stock markets ⁢on Monday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and ‍south Korea’s KOSPI both reached record highs, increasing by approximately 2.1⁣ percent and 2.3 percent respectively by midday local time.‍ Hong Kong’s Hang Seng also experienced gains, rising around 0.85 percent.

President Trump departed for Japan on monday after attending the ASEAN summit, where he is scheduled to meet wiht newly appointed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. He will then travel ⁢to South Korea on⁣ Wednesday ‌for the anticipated ‍meeting with‍ President Xi.

The negotiations occur amidst ongoing trade tensions. President Trump has implemented tariffs on trade with⁤ numerous partners, with the moast significant threats directed towards China. Earlier this month, Beijing announced plans to require⁤ export licenses for rare-earth magnets⁢ and semiconductor materials, possibly disrupting global supply chains. This⁣ announcement prompted a threat from President Trump to‌ impose a 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods starting november 1.

Analysts suggest these actions represent attempts by ‍both sides to strengthen‌ their negotiating positions ahead ‌of the Trump-Xi summit, as a full-blown trade war could have severe consequences for‌ the global economy. Rare earth minerals are crucial components‍ in numerous high-tech products, including smartphones, electric vehicles, and military equipment.

The event underscores Trump’s ⁤continued efforts ‌to ⁢position himself ‍as a global dealmaker, even outside of office. While details of‌ his ‌involvement⁢ were limited, the presence of the‌ former U.S. president ⁣lent symbolic weight to the agreement, ‌possibly bolstering confidence in its long-term viability.
