Trump and Starmer Golf Meeting: Trade Deals and Geopolitical Tensions

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor July 28, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Keir Starmer is engaged in discussions with Donald Trump, following Trump’s recent meeting with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen at his Turnberry golf course. The two leaders announced a trade framework that includes a 15% tariff on most goods exchanged between their countries, though many specific details are still to be finalized.

Trump is scheduled to visit his new golf course near Aberdeen on Tuesday for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. The course is set to open to the public on August 13, with tee times already available for purchase, indicating an expectation that the presidential visit will drive sales.

outstanding issues in U.S.-Britain trade relations require further refinement, including the tariff rates that Washington applies to steel imported from the United Kingdom.

Despite ongoing trade negotiations and the leaders’ focus on complex challenges in Gaza and ukraine, Starmer’s efforts to maintain a positive relationship with Trump appear to be yielding results. Trump stated during the G7 summit, “The U.K. is very well-protected.You know why? because I like them – that’s their ultimate protection.”

The U.S. trade surplus with Britain, which stood at $11.4 billion last year, is also likely to be a favorable factor for Trump. U.S. Census Bureau data suggests this surplus could increase this year. Trump has consistently criticized large U.S. trade deficits with allied nations and views tariffs as a method to quickly reduce these imbalances.

Trump is slated to make an unprecedented second state visit to Britain in September. During this visit, he will be hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle.

written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Thai and Cambodian forces engaged in armed conflict, prompting evacuations of thai residents from their homes. The clashes occurred near the border, with reports of airstrikes conducted by Thai forces using F-16 jets and drones.

Neither Thailand nor Cambodia is a signatory to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, a treaty that prohibits the use of such weapons. Thai authorities previously employed cluster munitions during a border dispute with Cambodia in February 2011, an incident that resulted in 20 fatalities.

Human Rights Watch has expressed concern over the disregard for international humanitarian law by both nations, highlighting the detrimental impact on civilians. The organization urged that diplomatic efforts prioritize the safety of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The report was contributed to by Associated Press writers Chalida Ekvitthayavechnukul and Grant Peck in Bangkok, Eileen Ng in Kuala Lumpur, and Sopheng Cheang, who reported from Oddar Meanchey, Cambodia.

Trump and Philippine leader plan to talk tariffs and China

Trump Welcomes Philippine President to White House Amid Shifting Indo-Pacific Dynamics

Focus on Security and Trade as China’s Influence Grows

President Donald Trump is set to host Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House, signaling an intent to strengthen bilateral security and economic ties. This meeting comes at a critical juncture for the Indo-Pacific region, marked by evolving geopolitical landscapes and increased assertiveness from China.

Alliance Under Pressure in Contested Waters

Marcos’ arrival marks him as the first leader from Southeast Asia to meet with Trump during his current term. The three-day visit underscores the significance of the long-standing alliance between the United States and the Philippines. It occurs as China’s actions in the South China Sea, particularly near the disputed Scarborough Shoal, have led to friction with Manila.

The U.S. views China as its primary economic and strategic competitor, prompting a sustained effort by successive administrations to reorient American military and economic focus toward the Asia-Pacific. Despite global diplomatic efforts elsewhere, such as brokering peace in Ukraine and Gaza, the Indo-Pacific remains a key theater.

Trade Deal on the Table as Tariffs Loom

Discussions are anticipated to include trade, with Trump having previously threatened a 20% tariff on Filipino goods should a deal not be reached by August 1.

“I intend to convey to President Trump and his Cabinet officials that the Philippines is ready to negotiate a bilateral trade deal that will ensure strong, mutually beneficial and future-oriented collaborations that only the United States and the Philippines will be able to take advantage of.”

—Ferdinand Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines

Philippine finance chief Ralph Recto indicated that Manila is open to offering preferential tariff rates on certain U.S. products to secure an agreement. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested that trade negotiations could indeed be a topic of conversation.

U.S. Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Stability

The White House has stated that the leaders will discuss their shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific. Ahead of his meeting with Marcos, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized America’s dedication to “achieving peace through strength” in the region.

“Our storied alliance has never been stronger or more essential than it is today, and together we remain committed to the mutual defense treaty. And this pact extends to armed attacks on our armed forces, aircraft or public vessels, including our Coast Guard anywhere in the Pacific, including the South China Sea.”

—Pete Hegseth, Defense Secretary

Marcos, whose nation is one of the oldest U.S. treaty allies in the Pacific, affirmed the importance of the mutual defense assurance. He noted that cooperation has intensified following Hegseth‘s visit to Manila earlier this year, citing joint exercises and U.S. support for modernizing the Philippine armed forces. The Philippines is currently facing significant threats, making this U.S. backing crucial.

South China Sea Tensions and Diplomatic Engagements

The broader context includes ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea, a vital global trade route, involving China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan. Chinese coast guard vessels have repeatedly employed water cannon against Filipino boats in these contested waters, a situation that China attributes to the Filipino vessels’ alleged illegal entry.

In May, Hegseth articulated at a Singapore security forum that China poses a threat and that the U.S. is actively “reorienting toward deterring aggression by Communist China.”

Separately, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Marcos reaffirmed the alliance’s role in maintaining regional peace and stability and explored avenues for closer economic ties, including enhancing supply chains. The U.S. has also sought to maintain open communication channels with Beijing. Rubio recently met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, where both sides agreed to explore cooperation and manage differences effectively. According to the U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, discussions between Rubio and Marcos focused on these key areas.

Trump Administration Restricts Mexico Flights, Impacts Airline Deal

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor July 20, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

The U.S. Department of Transportation has imposed new restrictions on all mexican airlines, requiring them to submit flight schedules for government approval. This move comes as a response to perceived unfair treatment of U.S. airlines by Mexico, with the U.S. seeking to ensure equitable practices.

The decision by the Transportation Department, led by administrator Billy Nolen (acting),is aimed at addressing ongoing disputes concerning the partnership between Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico. The U.S. has been seeking to end the airlines’ alliance, which began in 2016, arguing that Mexico’s actions have created an uneven playing field.

Delta and Aeromexico have contested the U.S. government’s efforts to dissolve their partnership, asserting that they should not be penalized for the Mexican government’s policies. The airlines have warned that terminating their agreement could disrupt approximately two dozen routes and result in an estimated $800 million loss in economic benefits for both countries, impacting tourism and employment.

In a statement, Delta expressed concern that the proposed termination of its partnership with Aeromexico would negatively affect consumers traveling between the U.S. and mexico, as well as U.S. jobs, communities, and transborder competition.

aeromexico’s press office indicated that it was reviewing the order and planned to issue a joint response with Delta. The order to terminate approval of the airlines’ agreement is not set to take effect until October, and both carriers are expected to continue challenging the decision.

Previously, the airlines had argued in filings that the cessation of direct flights could deter over 140,000 American tourists and nearly 90,000 Mexican tourists from visiting the respective countries, thereby harming the economies of both nations through reduced spending.

The implications of these actions on the broader trade relationship between the U.S. and Mexico, including ongoing negotiations over tariffs, remain unclear. A spokesperson for Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the President did not address the new restrictions during her public appearances on Saturday.

Associated Press writer Amaranta Marentes in Mexico City contributed to this report.

Syria: Druze-Bedouin Clashes Escalate Amid Humanitarian Crisis

by Emma Walker – News Editor July 18, 2025

Druze and Bedouin Communities in Syria Experience escalating Tensions

Beirut, Lebanon – Sectarian clashes have erupted in Syria’s Sweida province, a region predominantly inhabited by the Druze religious sect, which originated as a 10th-century offshoot of Ismailism, a branch of Shiite Islam.Over half of the world’s approximately one million Druze reside in Syria, with significant populations also in Lebanon and Israel, including the Golan Heights.

The recent escalation in Sweida began when members of a local Bedouin tribe, who are Sunni Muslims and have historically experienced intermittent conflicts with the Druze, established a checkpoint. According too reports, they attacked and robbed a Druze man, leading to a cycle of retaliatory attacks and kidnappings between the two communities.

Syrian researcher Ahmed Aba Zeid, who specializes in armed groups in southern syria, stated that there is “no specific reason” for the historical tensions between the groups, attributing them to broader social problems within Syria. He also suggested that the Syrian state may have exploited the recent incident to alter the situation in Sweida, inadvertently intensifying the conflict.

In response to the escalating violence, members of the Druze community in Israel have called for intervention to protect their co-religionists in Syria. Though, Druze leaders elsewhere in the region have rejected any form of Israeli involvement.Sheikh Sami Abi al-Muna, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Lebanon, expressed concern that the sectarian clashes in syria could provide a pretext for Israeli intervention and destabilize the region. He emphasized that the Druze community would not seek protection from Israel, which he believes is detrimental to their history and identity. Al-Muna urged all parties to adhere to a recently brokered ceasefire and advocated for national dialog to address inter-community issues in Syria.

Lebanese Druze leader Walid Joumblatt, who played a role in mediating the ceasefire, also called for the establishment of an investigative committee to examine violations against both Druze and Bedouin populations in Syria.
