The ‘Dream Team’ defeats France and takes gold in Olympic basketball

ParisThe Avengers accomplished their mission. The United States won their fifth consecutive gold medal by beating France 98-87 on Saturday in the men’s Olympic basketball final in Paris 2024, at an effervescent Bercy Arena in the face of local resistance against legends LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant.

In a repeat of the final from three years ago in Tokyo, Team USA redeemed itself from its fourth-place finish at the 2023 World Cup, a result that was the seed for the self-proclaimed “Avengers,” assembled by LeBron to settle that debt.

France had pulled within three points with three minutes left, but four consecutive three-pointers from Steph Curry ended their resistance. The Golden State Warriors guard claimed his first gold medal with 24 points.

With this gold, the United States has won 17 of the 21 Olympic men’s basketball tournaments. Only the USSR (Munich 1972 and Seoul 1988), Yugoslavia (Moscow 1980) and Argentina (Athens 2004) have been able to break the empire.

Silver is the fourth for France, which has always been beaten by Team USA in the final: Paris 2024 joins London 1948, Sydney 2000 and Tokyo 2020. Serbia took third place on the podium, beating Germany 93-83 with a triple-double from leader Nikola Jokic (19 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists).

Swedish duo crowned men’s beach volleyball champions at Paris Olympics

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 16, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Paris. The Swedish duo of David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig won gold in men’s beach volleyball at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Saturday.

With the Eiffel Tower in the background, the world’s number one pair easily beat third-seeded Germans Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler, winners of the silver medal, in just 34 minutes, 2-0 with scores of 21-10 and 21-13.

In a beach volleyball that was the star of these Games, thanks to the unbeatable location of its stadium built for the competition very close to the ‘Iron Lady’ in Paris, the Swedes – both 22 years old – maintained an insurmountable advantage over their rivals throughout the match.

With gold secured, the Swedes enjoyed the picture postcard completed by a joyful grandstand – filled in several sections with yellow and blue shirts – who, as throughout the Olympic volleyball tournament, came out in droves to enjoy the sport, not missing the opportunity to take selfies in one of the most picturesque settings of the Games.

Bronze went to Tokyo 2020 champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway, who beat Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan in straight sets 21-13, 21-16 in just 34 minutes.

In the women’s competition, Brazilians Ana Patricia and Duda, world number one, confirmed their worth by winning gold in an intense final against Canadians Brandie and Melisse in three sets (26-24, 12-21 and 15-10).

Boxer Atheyna Bylon, first Olympic medal for a Panamanian woman

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 16, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Paris. Boxer Atheyna Bylon lost the heavyweight (-75 kilos) final on Saturday and took silver in Paris 2024, the first Olympic medal for a Panamanian woman.

Bylon fell to China’s Li Qian, who was the clear favourite, by split decision (4-1) on the centre court of Roland Garros.

At 35 years old, this police sergeant won the fourth Olympic medal in the history of Panama and the first for a female athlete.

Before Bylon’s success, only two Panamanians had stood on an Olympic podium.

Lloyd LaBeach won two bronzes in the 100 and 200 metres at London 1948 and Irving Saladino took the country’s only gold with his victory in the long jump at Beijing 2008.

On Saturday, Bylon faced her biggest challenge of these Games against Li, determined to complete her Olympic collection that already included a silver from Tokyo 2020 and a bronze from Rio 2016.

The Chinese, who had easily won her first three fights, was able to stop Bylon’s initial momentum and counterattacked successfully to win the first round.

The Central American boxer tried to operate more cautiously in the second round but found it difficult to connect with punches to regain ground on the scorecards.

The experienced Li, 34, did generate reactions in the public every time her fists reached the Panamanian.

Bylon had to attack desperately in the final round, which was only enough for one of the five judges to see her as the winner.

Spanish Ayoub Ghadfa takes silver in the +92 kg

Meanwhile, Spanish boxer Ayoub Ghadfa suffered a clear defeat on Saturday against Uzbek Bakhodir Jalolov in the super heavyweight (+92 kg) final and took home a silver medal.

Ghadfa, who was vying to become the first Spanish Olympic boxing champion, was defeated by unanimous decision (5-0) by Jalolov, the defending champion, on the ring of the central court at Roland Garros.

Ghadfa’s silver and Enmanuel Reyes’ bronze in the heavyweight (-92 kg) category are the first two Olympic medals for Spanish boxing since Sydney 2000.

Rafael Lozano, now coach of the Spanish team, was the previous boxer from the country to reach the Olympic podium, with a bronze at Atlanta 1996 and a silver at Sydney 2000.

Spanish boxing now has three silver and three bronze medals to its name and still has the pending task of attacking the last step to gold.

Ghadfa, born in Marbella to Moroccan parents, dreamed of achieving it on a stage where Spain has celebrated as many as 14 victories by Rafael Nadal in the Parisian Grand Slam tournament.

On the Philippe-Chatrier ring, Ghadfa had achieved a spectacular victory on Wednesday over the Frenchman Djamili-Dini Aboudou, overcoming the pressure generated in favour of his rival by the 15,000 local spectators.

But on Saturday, with support in the stands relatively equal, Ghadfa came up against a much bigger opponent.

Champion at the 2020 Tokyo Games, Jalolov dominated the fight from the beginning, with passages in which he overwhelmed his rival with blows, until he achieved his second crown at the age of 30.

Russia and Belarus to take part in Paris Olympics closing ceremony: IOC

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 16, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Paris. Russians and Belarusians competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics as neutral individual athletes without their flag or emblem will be allowed to take part in the closing ceremony on Sunday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced.

Athletes were not allowed to take part in the opening ceremony on July 26, when teams paraded on boats down the River Seine.

“The IOC Executive Board has decided that Neutral Individual Athletes (NIA) may participate in the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024,” the IOC said in a statement on Saturday.

“The decision was made on the basis that it is not the teams that enter the Closing Ceremony, but all the athletes together, as well as the general conduct and respect for the principles of participation of AIN athletes during the Games. There will be no AIN flag.”

Teams from Russia and Belarus were banned from the Games over the invasion of Ukraine.

Only a few athletes have been cleared by the IOC to compete as AIN after undergoing a screening process designed to eliminate anyone who has publicly supported the war or had direct ties to the military.

A total of 32 athletes from Russia and Belarus competed in Paris and only a few remain in the French capital.

Russian authorities complained that the restrictions were unfair and discriminatory, and many of the athletes allowed to compete in Paris turned down offers to compete as neutrals.

The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee in October 2023 for recognising the Olympic councils of the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine: Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia.

Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan wins Olympic gold in marathon

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 15, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Paris. In a thrilling and memorable finale to close the athletics at the Paris 2024 Games, Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan took Olympic gold in the marathon on Sunday, after having won bronze in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres.

Hassan completed the legendary distance of 42.195 km with a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes and 55 seconds, setting a new Olympic record, and relegating Ethiopian Tigst Assefa (2h22:58) to silver and Kenyan Hellen Obiri (2h23:10) to bronze.

The Dutch athlete, born 31 years ago in Ethiopia, thus put the finishing touch to her Olympic performance, in which she surprised everyone by deciding to take part in the three longest distance events. She also had the merit of competing in the marathon early on Sunday after a 10,000-metre final that ended on Friday night, so she had very little recovery time, just 35 hours.

In Paris 2024, between series and races, Hassan has run 62,195 kilometres at high intensity and the marathon at these Olympic Games was especially demanding, with climbs and descents, on a less flat profile than usual.

Hassan was unable to emulate the triple Olympic gold medal won by Czech Emil Zatopek in Helsinki 1952, but his performance is nonetheless memorable.

At the 2020 Tokyo Games, she had also managed to climb onto the Olympic podium in three events, in that case with golds in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, and a bronze in the 1,500 metres.

There was excitement surrounding her success in the Olympic marathon on Sunday, where five kilometres from the finish line there were still five candidates in the leading group.

In the final kilometre, Hassan and Assefa came out on top and the victory was decided between the two, with the former having a successful run on the Esplanade des Invalides in a beautiful final sprint.

With the women’s marathon held on the last day instead of the men’s, as has been tradition until now, athletics bids farewell to these Olympic Games.

Michelle Gulyas wins gold in women’s modern pentathlon

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 15, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Versailles. Hungary’s Michelle Gulyas took gold in the women’s modern pentathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Sunday after breaking the world record for points in the sport’s final, which featured horses before moving on to obstacle courses.

France’s Elodie Clouvel took silver after starting the final laser run with a 13-second lead, but suffering a series of agonising misses on the target. South Korea’s Seong Seung-min took bronze.

Gulyas finished with 1,461 points, nine more than Clouvel, whose time to reach all the targets during the four stops of the 3,000-meter course was by far the slowest of the competitors.

With a large crowd making a lot of noise, especially for local singer Clouvel, Gulyas kept her nerves steady with a steady arm and gaze on a hot and bright afternoon.

“During the shoot I tried to focus only on myself,” the 23-year-old told reporters. “So I was thinking: 15,000 people, who cares?”

“But of course I cared because during the race it helped me a lot. Thanks to the crowd, I always knew where Elodie was, because depending on which side I was running on, the crowd was very, very loud. So I didn’t even have to look back,” she added.

Gulyas was the first Hungarian gold medallist in the women’s modern pentathlon since Zsuzsanna Voros in 2004, while Seong was the first Asian woman to win a medal in the discipline. Clouvel’s silver added to her win at Rio 2016.

“It’s been an incredible challenge,” said the Frenchwoman. “This season I’ve had some really ups and downs: a loss of confidence, I thought I couldn’t do it anymore, I panicked.”

“Today I kept my head and my arm… I’m very happy to have this medal, my second Olympic medal. It’s crazy,” she added.
