Osmar’s conviction, the result of his mental work: Laura Martínez

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 20, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The conviction with which Osmar Olvera executes each of his dives, even in the most tense moments, seems like an innate ability that few athletes boast; however, in reality it is the result of training in a transcendental area that still needs to be given more value in Mexico: psychology in sports.

Mental strength is also trained like any other technical aspect of a discipline. Osmar gives a lot of importance to mental health and now he can be a turning point in the country to make visible the relevance of this area.said Laura Martinez, a sports psychologist who works with the two-time Olympic medalist.

Olvera made history at Paris 2024 by becoming the second Mexican diver to win two medals at a summer event after winning, together with Juan Celaya, silver in the synchronized diving event from the three-meter springboard and bronze in the individual competition.

In each event he showed such confidence that he was able to stalk the representatives of China, the top power in this discipline. Now, upon returning from Paris, Olvera attended a press conference accompanied by psychologist Martínez, as a demonstration of the value he placed on mental work.

–Could we say that Osmar has a mental strength superior to that of other athletes?

–I couldn’t say if he has a superior ability to others, but the strength he has today is something he has worked very hard on. He is a very disciplined athlete, consistent in every sense. The ability he has developed is a mental strength through all his daily work.

Martinez indicated that it is not about having a winner’s mentalitya term that has become popular in sports media, but rather about setting short, medium and long-term goals, is understanding that it is a process and, above all, that to achieve these goals it is essential to train with dedication both in the psychological area and in the physical and technical areas.

Episodes of an athlete who lets himself get carried away by nervousness at the very key moment of a competition are often seen in almost every tournament. Martínez pointed out that although several athletes work with a sports psychologist, they often do not follow the instructions, do not trust the specialist or, in the worst of cases, have turned to people who lack the appropriate knowledge.

The importance of mental health is given to each of the athletes. If I give it a value of one percent and to reach 100 I am just that percentage short, then I am not completely prepared. That is why it is important that they put what is asked of them to the test, that they work with us and go to sports psychologists, it is not the same as a clinical psychologist.he explained.

Breaking stigmas

The American multi-Olympic medalist swimmer Michael Phelps was one of the first to speak about the importance of mental health for athletes. The pressure in high performance is often greater than in other areas, which is why in the last two decades sports psychology has begun to gain greater importance.

Now, Olvera is one of the few in Mexico who usually speaks openly about the importance of the daily work he does in that area as part of his training to get on the podium.

Although Martínez acknowledged that Mexico still needs a lot of work to promote the value of sports psychology, steps have been taken to make visible how important it can be in terms of results.

We are still far from the way sports psychology is handled, but we have made progress. Before, someone was questioned when they went to the psychologist, today we know that mental health is basic, there is more openness. Now it is important that we integrate as a multidisciplinary team. Osmar can be a turning point to give greater relevance to the area.he noted.

Both the diver and the specialist are already looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where they know they will face greater challenges after their feat in Paris.

One thing is the expectations that surround Osmar and another thing is the objectives he has. Surely they will change from those he had in Paris, we will do the breakdown to work towards the goals he has.the psychologist concluded.

Thomas Bach will not seek a third term as IOC president

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 17, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Paris. German President Thomas Bach of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Saturday that he would not seek a third term in office after 2025, which would have entailed amending the Olympic Charter.

“After careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that I should not ask for my mandate to be extended” in order to “protect the credibility” of the Olympic movement, the leader said emotionally at the close of the 142nd IOC session in Paris, where the Olympic Games will conclude on Sunday.

The 70-year-old former fencer, Olympic team champion at the 1976 Montreal Games, recalled that he was “one of the promoters” of limiting terms in an institution sometimes shaken by governance scandals.

When he was elected in 2013, the Bavarian hoped to embody the renewal of the Olympic movement – especially with less expensive and more environmentally friendly Games – under the premise of “change or be changed”.

“That mantra applies to me as well,” he said, before being forced to pause for a moment, tears welling up in his eyes.

The IOC will therefore elect his successor during its 143rd edition in Athens from 18 to 21 March 2025, with Thomas Bach remaining as acting president until June.

The debate about a possible third term was opened last October in Bombay (India) during the previous session of the body, when several IOC members asked the German to continue.

Bach kept his response to himself, given the ethics commission’s recommendations to wait until the end of the Paris Games so as not to interfere with the competition.

Hamis Kerr takes gold in Paris 2024 high jump

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 17, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Paris. New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr won the men’s Olympic high jump gold medal with a personal best of 2.36 metres after a long and gruelling finale on Saturday, securing his country’s first medal in the event.

Qatari defending champion Mutaz Barshim took bronze with a season-best of 2.34 metres.

Her failures to jump higher sparked a war of attrition between Kerr and American Shelby McEwen in their fight for gold after they mutually decided not to share the top step of the podium.

Both began to tire and failed to clear 2.38 metres after three attempts. The bar was lowered again to 2.36 metres and then to 2.34 metres. Kerr was the first to clear the bar at that height and ultimately claimed victory.

After clearing the bar, the New Zealander ran to the centre of the field and dropped to the grass in joy and relief. It was also an impressive result for McEwen, a personal best and a huge improvement after finishing 12th at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Barshim probably had a sense of déjà vu watching the duel. After the draw in the Tokyo final, he and Italian Gianmarco Tamberi decided to share the gold medal.

The Qatari did a somersault on the mat after his final jump, and the bronze became his fourth medal in as many Olympic appearances.

Tamberi, suffering from kidney colic, was out of action early in the competition, distressed after failing to clear 2.27 metres.

CAS ruling could award bronze to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 17, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

ParisRomanian gymnast Ana Barbosu could replace Jordan Chiles as the Olympic floor bronze medallist after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturned an appeal by the American’s coach who catapulted her onto the podium.

CAS ruled that Cecile Landi’s appeal to have 0.1 added to Chiles’ score, which catapulted her from fifth to third place, occurred outside the one-minute time limit allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

In its ruling, CAS wrote that the original order of positions should be restored, with Barbosu in third place, her teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea in fourth and Chiles in fifth.

The organization added that the FIG should determine the final ranking “in accordance with the previous decision,” but left it up to the FIG to decide who would take the medal behind gold medalist Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and silver medalist Simone Biles of the United States.

FIG spokeswoman Meike Behrensen said a statement from the organisation would be issued “in due course”.

The Romanian Olympic Committee had asked for three bronze medals to be awarded. Chiles posted a message saying she would withdraw from social media “for my mental health.” The U.S. gymnastics federation said in a statement that it was “devastated” by the ruling.

Chiles, 23, became the center of a controversy on social media. Several critics called on her to return the medal. Others made racist comments.

The gymnast posted on X earlier this week that “it’s funny how people still can’t be happy for someone.”

China wins gold in artistic swimming duet

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 17, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Paris. China won gold in the artistic swimming duet event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after the free routine held on Saturday, while the Spanish pair finished in seventh position and the Mexican was twelfth.

In the absence of the Russian swimmers, who have dominated this event at the last six Olympic Games, China stepped up to claim their throne, taking the two gold medals awarded in artistic swimming in Paris. The duo podium was completed by Great Britain and the Netherlands.

Despite having shone less in the free exercise, Chinese twins Wang Liuyi and Wang Qianyi benefited from the huge advantage they had built up on Friday with their impeccable technical routine to take gold with a total score of 566.4783.

The Asian giant thus adds its second unprecedented gold in artistic swimming after winning the team event on Wednesday.

The British duo, for their part, managed to climb to silver thanks to a great free exercise – the best score on Saturday – which allowed them to accumulate a total of 558.5367, despite finishing in fourth place on Friday.

Third place went to Dutch twins Bregje and Noortje De Brouwer with a total score of 558.3963 points.

The Spanish duo, formed by Alisa Ozhogina and Iris Tió, could not bring any further joy to the artistic swimming of their country, which on Wednesday won the team bronze with which they returned to an Olympic artistic swimming podium 12 years later.

Canadian Phil Wizard wins first men’s Olympic breakdancing gold

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 17, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Paris. Canadian b-boy Phil Wizard won his first Olympic gold in breakdancing on Saturday, defeating Frenchman Dany Dann in the final of the 2024 Paris Games, who took the silver medal.

Phil Wizard, whose real name is Philip Kim, triumphed on the dance floor at the Place de la Concorde in the French capital, while American b-boy Victor took bronze.

Breakdancing, popularly known as breakdancing, made its first and possibly last Olympic appearance at Paris 2024, after having already been scrapped from the Los Angeles 2028 programme.

In the competition, 16 dancers, known as b-boys, went head-to-head in a series of battles that began in a group stage and progressed to a knockout round.

At one of the most spectacular Parisian venues for these Games, the b-boys put on a show that wowed the audience.

Paul Wizard, a 27-year-old former world champion, had the crowd against him when he took on local Dany Dann, a 36-year-old dancer with blue hair whose real name is Danis Civil.

But the Canadian soon won over the spectators with an incredible routine that earned him a 3-0 victory determined by the judges.
