UN Urges Veto Reform Amidst Calls to Limit US & Russia’s Power

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 28, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Calls Mount to Abolish UN Veto⁤ Power as Global Order‍ Shifts

UNITED NATIONS -⁢ Growing international⁤ pressure is building ⁣for reform of the United Nations Security Council, specifically targeting the veto power held⁢ by its five permanent⁢ members – the United States, Russia, China,⁣ France, and the United Kingdom. Singapore‘s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan has become the ‍latest voice calling for a more ‌representative and‍ inclusive UN,arguing the current structure fails to reflect the realities of the 21st century.

Balakrishnan ⁤stated that the post-World War II world order “ended,” citing a dramatic shift in the distribution of economic weight, technological sophistication, and military power since 1945. This call⁢ for reform comes ⁢amid increasing frustration with the Security Council’s inaction on critical global conflicts, most recently demonstrated⁤ by the US veto of a resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza on February 21st. Fourteen ⁣other UN⁢ member states voted in⁤ favor of the resolution, wich the US opposed ‍due to its failure to condemn ⁢Hamas or acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defense.

The debate over the veto ⁢power is⁢ not new. Last year, during a UN Security Council Open Debate, Singapore also advocated for board reform, including restrictions on veto rights. The current‍ system, ⁣critics argue, allows a single permanent member to block resolutions even with overwhelming international support, effectively paralyzing the Council’s ability to address urgent crises.

Balakrishnan⁢ also emphasized the need ⁣for a stronger relationship between the Security Council and the UN General Assembly. He further indicated Singapore would reconsider its position on recognizing a Palestinian state should Israel take steps that further undermine the possibility of a two-state solution.

The escalating conflict in Gaza, where over 65,000 Palestinians have been killed as October 7, 2023 – the majority women and children – has intensified calls for accountability and a reevaluation of the UN’s‌ effectiveness. Israel maintains its military actions are aimed ‌at destroying Hamas, which claimed responsibility⁢ for the deaths of 1,200 peopel in ‌Israel and continues ‍to hold hostages in Gaza. The situation underscores the urgent need for a more equitable ‍and responsive international framework, advocates say, one where the interests of⁣ all nations are considered, not just those of a privileged few.

Indonesian Woman Jailed in Malaysia for Drug Trafficking Reconnects with family After 14 Years, Guided by Hand-Drawn Map

MALACCA, ‌Malaysia ‌ – After more than a decade of uncertainty and fears of execution, Ani Anggraeni, an Indonesian woman imprisoned in Malaysia for drug⁣ trafficking, has been reunited with her family thanks to a detailed map she drew from memory. The map, depicting landmarks near her Jakarta home, allowed relatives to finally locate her after losing contact in 2017.

Ani, now ‍65 and battling cancer, was⁤ arrested in 2011 at Penang airport ⁢for attempting to smuggle 4kg (8.8lbs) of methamphetamine into ‍Malaysia. She was sentenced under ‌the country’s strict anti-drug laws, which carry ⁣an‌ automatic death penalty. Like many Indonesians⁣ seeking economic opportunities, Ani, then 51, ‌had traveled‍ to Malaysia for work,‍ unaware ⁤she was being used as a drug⁢ mule. She believed she was delivering luxury clothes.

The reunion followed ⁣years of‌ desperate searching by Ani’s family, who feared the⁣ worst as Malaysia carries out executions for drug offenses. Contact was severed when ‍Ani’s daughter misplaced the only phone ⁢containing ani’s number – the sole means of communication.

“She was ‌contracted to pick up a package…she was instead arrested,” a family member explained, recounting the events that led to Ani’s imprisonment.

After ‍being moved between several prisons,Ani is currently incarcerated at Sungai Udang prison in Malacca. The hand-drawn map, detailing a mosque, train station, and surrounding Jakarta lanes, proved crucial in re-establishing contact ⁢and ⁤confirming she was still alive. The⁣ case highlights the plight of over a⁢ million Indonesians who migrate to ‍Malaysia for work, often ⁢facing precarious conditions and legal risks.

Uric Acid Drugs: Risks & Medications to Watch Out For

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor September 26, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Common Medications ⁢Can Trigger High Uric Acid, Increasing Gout Risk

Jakarta, Indonesia – Several widely prescribed medications can elevate uric acid levels in ⁣the blood,⁣ perhaps triggering gout or worsening ⁤existing symptoms, according to recent findings.Patients taking these ‌drugs should be aware of the risks and consult with their doctors.

Low-dose aspirin (75-150 mg) – commonly used for heart‍ attack and stroke prevention ‌- has ⁣been linked to ‍increased uric acid. Conversely,high-dose aspirin (over 2,000 mg daily) can reduce uric acid, but carries significant risks of bleeding and gastrointestinal toxicity.

Certain diuretics, notably ‌thiazide and furosemide, can also raise uric acid levels. However, potassium-sparing diuretics like ‌spironolactone pose a lower risk, though ‌medical consultation is still essential before use.

ACE inhibitors, frequently prescribed for high blood pressure and heart failure (examples include captopril and lisinopril),⁣ have also been shown to increase uric acid.Safer alternatives with‌ a lower risk ⁣include losartan and amlodipine.

patients undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia or lymphoma may experience a rapid increase in uric acid due to the rapid cell changes caused by the treatment. Immunosuppressive drugs used in ⁢conjunction with chemotherapy, such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus, further elevate gout risk.

Cyclosporine, used to prevent organ rejection in transplant patients, is known to ⁢increase uric acid. Similarly, long-term use of tacrolimus, another transplant immunosuppressant, can also contribute to elevated levels.

Individuals taking ‍cyclosporine or tacrolimus who suspect gout symptoms should ‍seek immediate⁣ medical attention.

Further data on managing high uric acid and preventing complications can be found here.

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 26, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Donald Trump‘s 2018⁢ meeting with Vladimir putin in Helsinki, ⁣Finland, sparked controversy after Trump appeared to side with Putin over U.S.intelligence agencies regarding Russian interference in the ⁢2016 presidential election. During a joint press conference, trump, when asked directly about‍ Russian meddling, stated‍ simply, “No collusion.”

The meeting, held July 16, 2018, followed ⁣a private ⁤two-hour discussion between the two leaders.Trump’s ⁣comments drew immediate criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, who accused him of undermining U.S. national security and appearing to legitimize Putin’s denials of interference.

Putin, during the same⁣ press conference, acknowledged that Russia had ⁢sought to influence ⁢the U.S. election but denied any direct involvement. He stated Russia did not interfere ⁣in the U.S. election, and that any claims to the contrary⁤ were based on unfounded accusations.

The “no collusion” remark became⁣ a ‌defining‌ moment of Trump’s presidency and fueled investigations into Russian interference, including Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s‌ investigation, which ultimately found ‌evidence of numerous contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian individuals but did not establish a criminal conspiracy. The meeting remains a subject of debate and⁣ scrutiny, highlighting the complex relationship between the U.S. and Russia.

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor September 25, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

Jakarta – Indonesian ⁤band The Thorny Tongue Assembly pulled its catalog from Spotify ⁢on September 24, 2025, citing concerns over the platform’s CEO, Daniel Ek‘s,⁣ investment in Helsing, a European military startup. The move joins a growing trend ‌of⁢ musicians‍ withdrawing from Spotify⁣ over‌ ethical objections.

The band stated in a ‍press release received⁣ by AFP on Thursday, September 25, 2025, that all‌ releases from “re-anamnesis” to the first part of‍ “NKKBS,” along with single releases-excluding⁤ songs bound‍ by label contracts-are⁢ no longer available on Spotify. They emphasized continued availability⁣ on ⁣platforms like Believe, stating their commitment to supporting listeners. The‍ Thorny Tongue ⁢Assembly’s decision reflects⁣ a refusal ‌to indirectly contribute to ⁢the tools⁢ of war, a stance they say clashes with the spirit of their music.

While ⁢some musicians are leaving Spotify, many ⁣remain on the platform, recognizing its promotional value, especially for emerging artists. The situation has also spurred discussion of alternative streaming services,‍ including Bandcamp, Qobuz, Apple Music, YouTube Music, YouTube, and The Storefront. some‍ musicians and fans‌ are also⁣ revisiting ⁣physical ‍album purchases, signaling a potential resurgence⁤ of that format.
