India Issues Flood Warning to Pakistan Amidst Strained Relations
Islamabad/New Delhi – August 25, 2025 – In a rareโ instance of communication, India alerted Pakistan toโค a potential flood in the Tawi River, despiteโฃ ongoingโ tensions between the two nations. The warning, โขdelivered โon August 24, 2025, was communicated throughโ diplomatic channels, bypassing the established mechanism of the โฃIndus Waters Commission, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesperson Shahfqat Ali Khan.
This marks the first confirmed official contact between India andโค Pakistan โฃsinceโข a four-day โขconflict in May.Khan stated, “on August 24, 2025, India communicated floodโ warnings throughโฃ diplomatic channels,โค ratherโข than through the Indus Waters Commission as required under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).” He further emphasizedโข India’s obligation to adhere to โall provisions of the treaty.
Sources inโค New Delhi indicated the flood alert was sharedโ on “humanitarian grounds.” Pakistani authorities subsequently issued warnings to residents basedโ on the information receivedโฃ from India.
The communication occurs against a backdrop of heightened discord. Followingโข the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, India announced a โขseries of punitive measures against โคPakistan, including suspending operations โunder the 1960 Indus โขWaters Treaty.โข Pakistan has condemned โขIndia’s decision to put the Treaty “in abeyance,” calling it a “seriousโ violation of international law” with possibly destabilizing consequences for South Asia, as reported by โstate-runโ Radioโข Pakistan.
Prior to the official confirmation, โ The News โข reported India had contacted โฃPakistan to share information regardingโฃ possible flooding. The Indus Waters โคTreaty,โ facilitated by the World โBank, has โbeen the cornerstone ofโฃ water sharing between India and Pakistan for over six decades, governing theโข distribution โฃand useโ of the Indus River and its tributaries.
Theโฃ alert comes as Pakistan grapplesโ with devastating monsoon rains, currently reportingโ a death toll of 800. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued warnings โof continued heavy rainfall across the countryโข untill August 30, 2025.
