SEATTLE – โA previously identified condition linked to long-term cannabis โคuse now has a formalโ diagnosis code from theโ World Health Association, aโ change announced October 1. Cannabisโฃ hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) causes severe nausea, vomiting, and stomach โpain.
The โaddition of a diagnosis โคcode to the WHOS medical manual โprovides a standardizedโ way for โdoctorsโ to identify and track the syndrome,โ which is particularly valuable for addiction research. It also allows healthcare providers to more easily recognize CHSโฃ when reviewing patient medical histories.
“It helps us count and monitor these cases,” explained Beatriz โคCarlini, a research associate โฃprofessor at the University of Washington School of Medicine who studiesโข the health effects of cannabis.โ
While the syndrome is gaining recognition, many doctors remain unfamiliar with โคit andโฃ the reasons why itโฃ affects โฃsome cannabis users and not others are still unkown.โค
Treatment options range from home remedies, such as hot showers,โค to medications like Haldol and โฃover-the-counter treatments like capsaicin cream.
