Doctor Warns 10,000 Steps May Not Offset Risks of Prolonged Sitting
New Delhi: A vascular surgeon is raising awareness about the hidden health risks of โคextended periods of sitting, explaining thatโ achieving a daily step goal – even 10,000 steps โ- doesn’t necessarily counteract the damage caused by remaining desk-bound for hours.
Dr.โข Sumit โคKapadia,a varicose vein โspecialist, detailed in a recent Instagram postโค thatโค the body doesn’t function in a way that allows evening exerciseโฃ to fully reverse the negative effects of a sedentaryโค workday.โค He emphasized โขthat spending approximately 10 hours seated, โคsuch as from 9 am to โ7โ pm, can already inflict harm โคon circulation, nonetheless of later โขactivity.
“You can hit your step goal in the eveningโฆbutโ if you’ve โขbeen desk-bound from 9 AM to 7 โขPM, yourโ veins have already โtakenโค the damage,” โขDr. Kapadia wrote.
Heโฃ clarified that vein health is more dependent on frequency of movement โคthroughout โthe day then total distance walked. Prolonged sitting leads to blood stagnation, weakening of โขvein valves, swelling, and increasedโข risk of varicose veins and โblood clots.โฃ “Circulation doesn’t depend on how โคmuch you walk. โIt depends on โhow โoften you move,” he stated.
Dr. โKapadiaโ recommendsโ breaking up โlong periods ofโ sitting byโฃ standingโข up hourly, stretching, takingโ brief walks, and actively engaging calf muscles – which heโค refers to as the body’s “peripheral heart” due to โtheir โcrucial role in blood flow.
“Tiny breaks.โ Huge difference.โค Your veins don’t need marathons. Theyโ need movement,”โ he advised.
The post โhas sparked conversation online, with usersโข sharing their own โexperiences with the consequencesโ of prolonged โsitting, โincluding hip andโค back pain, and โขdifficulty with prolonged standing.
