Champaign, IL – The Illinois Fighting Illini baseball team suffered a 10-8 defeat in their home opener against the Butler Bulldogs on Tuesday evening at Illinois Field, despite a late rally that fell short. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Johnson struggled early, allowing Butler to build a lead that Illinois could not fully overcome.
The Bulldogs quickly established a presence, scoring in the first inning with an RBI single from graduate student third baseman Alex Christie, according to the Daily Illini. Butler extended their lead to 3-0 after a two-out double by junior second baseman Charlie Schebler and a subsequent single by senior outfielder Will Burgess.
Illinois responded emphatically in the bottom of the first. A series of hits, including RBI singles from graduate student designated hitter Daniel Contreras and junior outfielder Collin Jennings, along with a two-run double by freshman first baseman AJ Putty and an RBI double from senior outfielder Cole Warehime, gave the Illini a 5-3 advantage.
However, the Illini offense stalled after the first inning, managing only one hit – a single by Warehime – between the second and sixth innings. Butler capitalized on Illinois’ offensive slump and defensive miscues. A series of hit batters and singles in the second inning led to a two-run single by junior outfielder Gavin Gilmore, tying the game at 5-5.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the third inning, highlighted by a solo home run from Burgess. Further damage was inflicted through bunt singles and a sacrifice fly, extending Butler’s lead to 8-5. Illinois head coach Dan Hartleb acknowledged the team’s defensive struggles, stating they “gave away 5 runs” due to inconsistencies behind the plate.
Illinois attempted a comeback in the late innings. A two-run single by senior catcher Will Johannes in the seventh inning narrowed the gap to 10-7. In the eighth, a bases-loaded walk issued to redshirt junior third baseman Kyle Schupmann brought the score to 10-8.
Despite the late surge, Illinois was unable to score in the ninth inning, resulting in their third loss of the season. Hartleb noted the team’s improved energy in the later innings, stating they were “scratching, crawling,” but emphasized the need to avoid putting themselves in difficult situations. Illinois will next face VCU on Friday at 10 a.m. CST.
