Poland prepares for Billie Jean King Cup Play-Offs in Gorzów wielkopolski
Gorzów Wielkopolski, Poland – November 10, 2024 – The Polish women’s tennis team is set to compete in the Billie jean King Cup Play-Offs, beginning Friday, November 14th, in Gorzów Wielkopolski. This marks the second time poland has hosted a major women’s tennis event this year, following the April billie Jean King Cup qualifying matches in Radom where Ukraine secured advancement to the September finals in Shenzhen, finishing ahead of Poland and Switzerland.
The November tournament will utilize a Round Robin format. Poland will open their competition against New Zealand on November 14th, followed by a match against Romania on November 16th. Each day will feature two singles matches and one doubles match. Romania and New Zealand will play each other on November 15th.
The winners of the seven Play-Off groups, including Group B where Poland is competing, will qualify for the BJK Cup 2026 qualifications, which will revert to a home-and-away match system. The remaining 14 teams will be placed in Group I.
Last year,Poland reached the finals of the competition but were eliminated in the semi-finals by Italy. iga Świątek played a key role in that run, winning three singles matches against Paula Badosa, Linda Noskova, and Jasmine Paolini, and also one doubles match alongside Katarzyna Kawa. though, a crucial doubles match ultimately led to their defeat.
Świątek is also scheduled to compete in the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico (November 1-8) before joining the Polish team.Captain Dawid Celt has yet to announce the full squad for the BJK Cup matches, but will select four additional players to join Świątek.
