Latvian Ski Sprinters Fall Short at Olympics: Results & Reactions

Milano-Cortina 2026 witnessed a challenging day for the Latvian contingent in cross-country skiing sprint events, as neither the men nor the women managed to advance beyond the qualification rounds. The classic sprint, held on February 10th, saw Norway’s Johannes Klæbo and Sweden’s Linn Svahn claim gold, but the focus for Latvian fans was on the performance of their national team.

Auziņa Leads Latvian Women, But Falls Short

Kitija Auziņa emerged as the top performer among the Latvian women, securing 71st place in the qualification round. Her time of 4:16.03 minutes, however, left her nearly 40 seconds behind the leaders. Auziņa herself expressed dissatisfaction with her performance, citing issues with the ski waxing. “I feel like that wasn’t my result, that isn’t me,” she stated, indicating a struggle with both the course and the equipment. “It was simply a huge battle with the track and the skis.”

Samanta Krampe finished in 78th position with a time of 4:22.81, whereas Linda Kaparkalēja, in her first Olympic appearance, narrowly avoided a fall and finished 84th in 4:27.62. The near-miss visibly upset Kaparkalēja, who was seen struggling to contain her emotions after the race. The disappointment was palpable, as she had hoped for a stronger debut on the Olympic stage.

The top three qualifying spots were claimed by Swedish skiers Lina Svahn, Jonna Sundling, and Johanna Hagström, granting them the advantage of selecting favorable lanes for the quarterfinal heats.

Vīgants Leads Latvian Men, But Lacks Pace

On the men’s side, Raimo Vīgants led the Latvian team with a 52nd-place finish, clocking a time of 3:26.26. Despite a respectable effort, he remained over seven seconds behind the 30th and final qualifying position. Lauris Kaparkalējs finished 57th in 3:28.33, and Niks Saulītis trailed in 77th place.

Johannes Klæbo dominated the men’s qualification, finishing in a blistering 3:07.37. The Norwegian’s performance underscored the high level of competition at the Milano-Cortina Games.

Vīgants, speaking to Latvian Television after his race, expressed surprise at the significant gap in performance. “I don’t know what happened. I didn’t expect such a big gap,” he said. He noted that while the skis themselves were good, the course presented a considerable challenge with two technical climbs that proved difficult to navigate effectively.

Saulītis echoed the sentiment, stating that his ski selection may have been a misjudgment, particularly on the uphill sections. “I think we’ll go down much better in the downhill and be much happier,” he commented. Kaparkalējs opted for a more conservative ski setup, prioritizing grip over speed, a decision he believed was ultimately sound despite not yielding a qualifying time.

Context and Implications

The results highlight the challenges faced by Latvian cross-country skiers in the classic sprint discipline. Patrīcija Eiduka, Latvia’s leading female skier, opted to skip the event, as the classic style is not her strongest suit. This decision underscores the strategic considerations teams make when navigating the diverse range of events at the Winter Olympics.

Auziņa’s 71st-place finish represents an improvement over her performance at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where she finished 75th. Krampe also showed slight improvement, moving from 72nd in Beijing to 78th in Milano-Cortina. However, these incremental gains were not enough to propel any of the Latvian skiers into the next round.

The failure to qualify for the quarterfinal heats means the Latvian skiers will not contend for medals in the sprint event. Their focus will now shift to the remaining races on the schedule, where they will appear to build on their experiences and strive for better results. The demanding course and the highly competitive field at the Milano-Cortina Games have set a high bar for all participating athletes, and the Latvian team will need to regroup and refine their strategies to compete effectively.

The dominance of Klæbo and Svahn in the qualification rounds signals their status as strong contenders for gold in the sprint event. Their performances will undoubtedly put pressure on their rivals as the competition progresses. The quarterfinal heats promise to be a thrilling spectacle, as the top 30 skiers battle for a place in the semifinals and a chance to compete for Olympic glory.
