“Slovenia Relegated from Ice Hockey World Championship Elite Group After Loss to Slovakia”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 21, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Slovenia’s ice hockey players were relegated from the elite group of the WC after a year. It was decided by their 0:1 loss against the Slovaks, who kept their hope of progressing to the playoffs. The Germans beat Hungary 7-2, won for the third time in a row and are fourth. Nico Sturm scored two goals, John Peterka collected 4 points.

The Slovenians from the bottom of the basic group B won’t beat any of their opponents in Riga. Coach Matjaž Kopitar’s men did not score even in the sixth game of the tournament.

The Slovakian team, on the other hand, kept hope of progressing from the group to the knockout stages. It was decided by Richard Pánik’s goal 15 seconds after the start of the second period. Stanislav Škorvánek picked up the clean sheet thanks to 33 successful saves.

A single goal was enough for the Slovaks

The Slovaks, who needed a full point gain to maintain their chances of promotion, still have the situation in their hands. They are three points behind the fourth-placed Latvians, with the last match before both teams. In it, Slovakia will challenge Norway, the home team of Switzerland. In favor of the Slovakian selection, a mutual duel is played, in which they beat the Latvians 2:1.

Lunter had the first big chance in the sixth minute, but he couldn’t beat goalkeeper Gračnar. Despite good opportunities, the Slovaks did not take advantage of the first overtime, not long after it ended, Škorvánek’s attention was checked by Sabolič. In the 19th minute, a completely alone Maver appeared in front of the Slovakian goalkeeper for a moment, but lost the mini-fight with Škorvánek. The Slovaks won the opening period with accurate shots 17:6, but it still ended goalless.

The beginning of the second act brought the decisive moment of the entire match. Regenda did a great job of finding Pánik, who had been stepped on in front of the offensive blue line, and although the puck escaped a little before the end, he was still able to shoot past Gračnar. Lunter and Hrivík could have increased the lead of the Slovaks shortly after each other, but they failed. Verlič, on the other hand, was close to equalizing with a huge chance in the power play in the 26th minute, but narrowly missed from an ideal position.

Hudáček and Urbas, on the other hand, did not take advantage of other opportunities. The Slovenians then played the second overtime in the match, but instead of equalizing, they almost took a two-goal deficit. After the escape of Sukeľ, Gračnar kept Slovenian hopes afloat.

In the third 20-minute period, the Slovaks carefully guarded their lead, while the opponent was chasing an equaliser. Although the Slovenians had a shot advantage (16:9), they did not overcome Škorvánek even in the final game without a goalkeeper, when Sabolič and Jeglič had great chances.

The Germans struck in the middle part

The Germans decided the duel in the second period, in which they bounced from a 1:0 to 4:0 lead within three minutes, Nico Sturm scored two goals, John Peterka collected four Canadian points for the goal and three assists.

The Hungarians started the match well and created two promising chances in the first minute. Subsequently, however, the opponent dominated the duel and the central figure was goalkeeper Dominik Horváth for a long time. He made seven saves in the first five minutes. The Germans took the lead in the 8th minute when Stachowiak scored after a quick finish.

However, Horváth coped with other chances and kept the team in the game. In the 26th minute, Szuber went to the cabins with a higher penalty and the Hungarians had a chance to equalize. In addition, Seider was immediately expelled and the Germans defended themselves in three. Sofron even managed to beat goalkeeper Niederberger, but referee Hribik disallowed the goal due to a previous foul by Bartalis immediately after the goal.

The Hungarians thereby lost part of their advantage, and after regaining the advantage of one player in the field, they clearly documented why they are the worst in the use of power plays in the tournament. So far, they have not been able to punish a single foul by their opponents. And the Germans punished them in the second part. First, Seider and Sturm scored within 18 seconds, then in the 38th minute, Sturm finally decided the duel with a power play and scored his fifth goal at the World Cup.

At the beginning of the third part, Peterka added the fifth goal after Horváth’s individual action and hesitation. Hungary then managed to score two goals, but the Germans took over again and added more goals. The Hungarians are still waiting for their first victory over Germany, they conceded seven goals for the fourth time at the World Cup.

“Switzerland Defeats Slovakia 4-2 at World Hockey Championship, Germans Beat Denmark 6-4”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 19, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

In the fourth match at the World Championship in Riga, Switzerland’s hockey players conceded their first goal, but in the end they defeated Slovakia 4:2 and won the fourth match in Group B. In Group A in Tampere, the Germans beat Denmark 6:4, scored for the first time in the fourth match and stayed in in the quarterfinal game.

Switzerland’s winning goal was scored by Christian Marti in the 47th minute. The Slovaks lost for the third time in the tournament and are fifth, but now they have to face the teams that are behind them in the table.

The Swiss used two more reinforcements from the NHL for the first time in the match – defender Siegenthaler and forward Hischier from New Jersey, who immediately participated in the first goal. Although Miranda threatened at first, Siegenthaler opened the scoring in the 6th minute, who shot past goalkeeper Hlavaj from the blue line.

The Slovaks, whose lineup was missing their most productive player Cehlárik, who was injured, then created several promising opportunities. But they didn’t beat goalkeeper Mayer.

The players from the country of the Helvetic Cross then did not use two power plays, but in the 25th minute they increased the lead by two to one after a successful renumbering. Niederreiter beat Hlavaj. The Slovaks were able to respond in a flash, 21 seconds later Kudrna, who was playing for the first time in the tournament, took down. The Swiss conceded for the first time at the World Cup and after 205 minutes and eight seconds.

The Swiss were significantly more active with shots, Malgin, Haas and Simion, who was weakened, got into promising positions and was stopped only at the cost of a foul by Pánik. In the subsequent penalty shootout, however, Hlavaj was successful against Fial. The favorite subsequently regretted it even more, as Regenda equalized with a quick finish 31 seconds before the end of the second period.

The key moment of the match came in the 47th minute, when Marti’s shot from the blue line was unfortunately deflected by defender Ivan. The Slovaks tried to equalize on the power play, but conceded the fourth goal.

The Germans have the first points

Encouraged by the previous wins, the Danes entered the game well, in the second minute they could open the Storm’s score after a two-to-one outnumbering. But he did not succeed, as did Seider on the other side, who hit the post.

The score changed for the first time in the 6th minute, when Moritz Müller unfortunately directed Lassen’s shot from the blue line into his own goal.

The Germans were able to return to the game in the second period, they increased their shooting activity and prevailed with a goal. Shortly before the halfway point of the match, forward Peterka shot past Dichow, then Ehl took advantage of the slight hesitation of the Danish goalkeeper, and Ehl promptly finished, and captain Moritz Müller ended the most successful game passage of the Germans in the tournament after an ideal pass from Noebels.

But the Danes were able to reduce 23 seconds before the end of the second period, Bau Hansen beat Niederberger. Ehlers was close to equalizing in the third part, but Wejsem managed to do so only in the 56th minute. But the Germans responded quickly, 20 seconds later Jonas Müller restored the lead with a shot from the blue line.

In a dramatic ending, the Germans kept the win, which realistically kept them in the game for promotion. They came through twice during the opponent’s power play, Wejse gave a spark of hope for the Danes for a moment with his second goal.

The hero Suchánek caught the Swedes – when we scored a goal, I started screaming and jumping

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 5, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Ice hockey goalkeeper Tomáš Suchánek put on a great performance in the Czech junior national team’s victory in the semi-finals of the World Championship against Sweden 2:1 after extra time. In regulation time, he faced just 17 shots and conceded once, but made key saves in the allotted time. The 19-year-old goalkeeper faced five tries from the northerners and after Jiří Kulich made the decision with 69:10, he could start celebrating.

“In overtime, the opponent got the better of it. I don’t know what it was. Maybe we were a little nervous. But luck was on our side. Maybe also thanks to the fact that the Swedes had him in the group match.” Suchánek said after the match, pointing to the first Czech-Swedish match in the basic round, in which coach Radim Rulík’s men were more active and played better, but lost 2:3 after extra time.

This time, however, the Czechs cheered in the end. “It was incredible nervousness and an unforgettable experience. When we scored a goal, I started screaming, jumping, flying around the stadium. Then I remember chasing Jiří Kulich,” laughs Suchánek.

In the sixth league game, Přerov’s protégé conceded only once, at the beginning of the second period he was beaten by defender Ludvig Jansson with a shot from behind. “I only saw the puck at the last moment, it flew between our player’s legs. through Jaroslav Chmelař block.

However, the Czech team created a big lead in the third period and finally David Jiříček managed to equalize it in the power play. “The pressure was incredible. I kept telling myself that every save I made was extremely important. I believed the boys would score at least one goal. My job wasn’t to score another,” said the Tri-City Americans goalkeeper.

Suchánek has fulfilled his task. Kulich’s goal 50 seconds before the end of extra time subsequently took the Czech Republic to the final, in which they will enter after 22 years. “It’s incredible, this is what each of us dreamed of as a child. I’m very proud of the team,” Suchánek exulted.
