India Beat Zimbabwe: T20 World Cup Super 8 Victory Keeps Semifinal Hopes Alive

India defeated Zimbabwe by 72 runs in a crucial T20 World Cup Super Eight match played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday, February 26, 2026, keeping their semi-final hopes alive.

The defending champions set a challenging target of 257 for Zimbabwe, who displayed spirited resistance throughout their innings. Despite a remarkable 97 not out from Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett, the African side fell short, finishing at 184-6.

India’s victory was built on a strong batting performance, spearheaded by Abhishek Sharma, who scored 55 off 30 balls. Sanju Samson, returning to the playing XI, made an immediate impact with a quickfire 24 off 15 balls, including a six off the second delivery he faced. His aggressive start allowed Sharma to settle and build his innings.

Hardik Pandya provided a late flourish, smashing a 50 off 23 balls and combining with Tilak Varma in an 84-run partnership that included eight sixes and five fours. This late surge propelled India beyond the 250-run mark.

Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming 3-24 in his four overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya maintained tight control, conceding only 21 runs between them in their combined three overs, despite remaining wicketless. Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, and Shivam Dube each took one wicket.

The win does not alter India’s position in the Group 1 points table, but sets up a decisive match against the West Indies on Sunday in Kolkata. South Africa have already secured a semi-final berth after defeating the West Indies in Mumbai on Thursday. Zimbabwe will face South Africa in Latest Delhi on Sunday.

India are likely to develop a couple of changes to the playing XI. Sanju Samson is expected to return to the side. All-rounder Axar Patel is similarly expected to reach back after being benched in the previous game against South Africa. Rinku Singh’s place in the playing XI is also in doubt after he left home for a family emergency ahead of the Zimbabwe game.

T20 World Cup: Australia Eliminated, Zimbabwe Qualify for Super Eights

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 17, 2026

Kandy, Sri Lanka – A rain-soaked pitch at the Pallekelle Stadium in Kandy brought a premature end to Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign on Tuesday, as their Group B match against Ireland was abandoned without a ball being bowled. The washout simultaneously secured Zimbabwe’s qualification for the Super Eight stage.

Zimbabwe’s advancement, alongside Sri Lanka as the Group B qualifiers, sets up a challenging Super Eight schedule against the West Indies, India, and South Africa. Ireland’s hopes were extinguished alongside Australia’s.

Persistent drizzle throughout the day forced umpires to call off the match at 5:30 pm local time (1200 GMT), well before the 6:10 pm cut-off for a minimum five-over contest. Australia, having already suffered defeats to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, needed an Ireland victory to maintain a mathematical chance of progression. Zimbabwe now hold an unassailable five points, with one match remaining, while Ireland are third with three points. Australia, with only two points and a final game against Oman, can no longer overtake Zimbabwe.

The Australian squad endured a troubled build-up to the tournament, beset by injuries and controversial selection decisions. Key pace bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were ruled out due to injury, while captain Mitchell Marsh missed the opening matches after sustaining testicular bleeding and a groin injury during training. The omission of Test star Steve Smith, despite his strong recent form in the Large Bash League and recognized ability against spin bowling, also drew scrutiny. Smith was added to the squad as cover last week, but was then left out of the crucial match against Sri Lanka on Monday, a game Australia lost by eight wickets.

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza celebrated his team’s achievement, but cautioned against complacency. “We have approach this far. We will celebrate but we have a game against Sri Lanka to come,” Raza said. “This is only a tick in the box and this is not the only thing that we set out for. Everyone loves an underdog story.”

Ireland skipper Lorcan Tucker expressed his disappointment at the manner of their elimination. “Obviously very disappointed to head out in this fashion, but completely uncontrollable,” Tucker stated. He also pointed to shortcomings in his team’s performance, citing batting failures and costly fielding errors, particularly dropped catches against Sri Lanka, as key factors. “Hopefully, we will handle these tough situations differently moving forward.”

Despite the inclement weather, a dedicated group of approximately two dozen Zimbabwe fans maintained a vibrant atmosphere throughout the afternoon, singing and dancing in support of their team. Raza acknowledged the crucial role of the fans, stating, “I can tell you, whichever corner they’re sitting at, at any ground, they’ll be the loudest, and they have the songs. They just keep the vibe. They keep lifting us up when their energies are down — and in this weather, it can be sometimes. But when we hear them to push us on and we know the songs as well, it gives us that energy as well.”

Australia’s remaining match against Oman on Friday will now be a dead rubber, offering little more than an opportunity to salvage some pride.

T20 World Cup: Australia Eliminated, Zimbabwe Qualify for Super Eights

Kandy, Sri Lanka – A rain-soaked pitch at the Pallekelle Stadium in Kandy brought a premature complete to Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign on Tuesday, as their Group B match against Ireland was abandoned without a ball being bowled. The washout simultaneously secured qualification for Zimbabwe to the Super Eights stage of the tournament.

The decision, made at 5:30 pm local time (1200 GMT), eliminated both Australia and Ireland from contention. Zimbabwe, already with a win over Australia, now progress alongside Sri Lanka as the Group B qualifiers. They will face the West Indies, India and South Africa in the next phase of the competition.

Australia needed Ireland to defeat Zimbabwe to maintain a mathematical chance of advancing, but the inclement weather dashed those hopes. Despite having one remaining match against Oman on Friday, Australia’s two points are insufficient to overtake Zimbabwe, who have five points and a game in hand.

The Australian squad endured a troubled build-up to the tournament, beset by injuries and controversial selection decisions. Key pace bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were ruled out due to injury, weakening the bowling attack. Captain Mitchell Marsh was sidelined for the opening matches after sustaining a groin injury and testicular bleeding during training. Adding to the pre-tournament turmoil, Test batsman Steve Smith was initially omitted from the squad despite strong recent form in the Big Bash League, particularly his proficiency against spin bowling. Smith was later added as cover but was then surprisingly left out of the crucial match against Sri Lanka, a game Australia lost by eight wickets.

Zimbabwe captain Sikander Raza celebrated his team’s achievement, acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead. “We have come this far. We will celebrate but we have a game against Sri Lanka to come,” Raza said. “This is only a tick in the box and this is not the only thing that we set out for. Everyone loves an underdog story.”

Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker expressed his disappointment at the manner of their elimination. “Obviously very disappointed to go out in this fashion, but completely uncontrollable,” Tucker stated. He also pointed to shortcomings in his team’s performance, citing batting failures and costly fielding errors, particularly dropped catches during their match against Sri Lanka, as key factors in their early exit.

Despite the disappointment for the eliminated teams, the rain failed to dampen the spirits of Zimbabwe’s travelling supporters. Approximately two dozen fans enthusiastically celebrated their team’s qualification with singing and dancing throughout the afternoon. Raza praised the unwavering support of the fans, noting their ability to energize the team even in challenging conditions. “I can tell you, whichever corner they’re sitting at, at any ground, they’ll be the loudest, and they have the songs,” he said. “They just keep the vibe. They keep lifting us up when their energies are down — and in this weather, it can be sometimes.”

T20 World Cup: Zimbabwe Through, Australia Eliminated After Rain Washes Out Ireland Match

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 17, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment on Tuesday as a rain-affected match between Zimbabwe and Ireland confirmed their elimination, while simultaneously securing Zimbabwe’s progression to the Super Eight stage.

Persistent rain at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Sri Lanka forced the abandonment of the Zimbabwe-Ireland contest, awarding each team a point. This result elevated Zimbabwe to five points in Group B, guaranteeing them a place in the next round alongside Sri Lanka, who had already qualified after defeating Australia on Monday.

The washout effectively ended any lingering hopes for Mitchell Marsh’s Australian side, who had begun their tournament with a 67-run victory over Ireland but then suffered a 23-run defeat to Zimbabwe last Friday. That loss against Zimbabwe, repeating a result from the inaugural tournament in 2007, proved pivotal, leaving Australia needing a series of unlikely outcomes to remain in contention.

Australia needed Zimbabwe to lose both of their remaining matches – against Ireland and Sri Lanka – and then to defeat Oman in their final group stage game, while as well significantly improving their net run-rate. However, the point earned by Zimbabwe against Ireland rendered those calculations irrelevant.

Sri Lanka sealed their Super Eight spot with an eight-wicket victory over Australia on Monday, a match in which Pathum Nissanka scored a century off 52 balls. Australia posted 181 all out in their innings, with Mitchell Marsh scoring 54 off 27 balls and Travis Head contributing 56 off 29, but Sri Lanka reached their target of 182 in 18 overs, with Nissanka remaining unbeaten on 100.

Zimbabwe’s qualification marks a historic moment for the team, having previously reached the Super 12 stage in 2022. Their match against Sri Lanka on Thursday will determine the Group B winner. Australia’s final match against Oman on Friday is now a dead rubber.

The Australian team, crowned T20 World Cup champions in 2021, have struggled in this tournament, and their early exit represents a significant setback. The team’s performance has been particularly scrutinized given the absence of several senior players.
