Asia Cup Trophy Disputeโ Nears Resolution asโ BCCI Confirms ICC Negotiation Role
Dubai, UAE โ- The deadlock surrounding the presentation of the Asia Cup trophy to the winning โฃIndian team is expected to be resolved soon, with the Board ofโ Control for Cricket inโค India (BCCI) โconfirming the involvement of the international Cricket Council (ICC) inโ ongoing โคnegotiations. Theโฃ dispute arose after Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian sideโ refused to โขaccept the trophy from Asian Cricket โCouncil (ACC)โ president Mohsin Naqvi following their victoryโข in the eight-team competition.
Naqvi, โฃwho is also pakistan’s Interior Minister, โฃsubsequently secured the trophy within the ACCโ headquarters, instructing โคofficials to prevent its โฃremoval. This โaction followed Naqvi’s reported insistence on personally presenting the trophy, leading to a power struggle with the BCCI.
BCCI secretary Jay โshah stated thatโค discussions with Naqvi have been “positive” and a resolution is anticipated shortly. he dismissed rumors of a formal ICC committee being establishedโ to address the impasse.
“Althoughโ one of the senior โpersons โคfromโ ICC is involved in the process of negotiation, there is no requirementโข for any such thing (a committee) โคat this stage. theโ issueโฃ will be โresolved before anyโฃ such drastic step is taken by the ICC,” Shah told the Press Trust of india (PTI).
ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khawaja and CEO Sanjog Gupta have reportedly been instrumental inโ facilitatingโค talks between theโ BCCI and PCB. โขshah expressed optimism, stating,”Definitely,in the coming times,if thingsโค go in a positive way,the issue will be sorted at the earliest.”
The trophy controversy occurred against a backdrop of heightened tensions during the โAsia Cup, marked by three encounters between India and Pakistan – all wonโค by India. The โขtournament saw instances ofโ on-field friction, beginning โwith the Indian team’s decision notโ to shake hands with Pakistani players in solidarity with victims of the โขPahalgam terror attack. Subsequent gesturesโ byโ Pakistani players โขSahibzada Farhan and โคHaris Rauf were deemedโฃ offensive, leading โคto fines for both teams’ players; โSuryakumar โฃYadav was fined 30% of his match fees, and Haris Rauf faced a two-match suspension after accumulatingโ four demerit points.
