The United States announced, on Wednesday, that the Houthi group in Yemen flooded the “Eritrete C” shipping ship in the Red Sea, killing an unknown number of people, in the second incident of its kind in just four days.
The American embassy in Yemen said that a “large number of survivors” were captured, demanding “the immediate and unconditional release” of them, without providing additional details about the death toll.
For its part, the European Union’s “Asbidis” mission, which is stationed in Greece, stated that 19 people from the Etnette C crew are still missing. She explained that the ship was carrying 22 crew members and three security guards, but it did not confirm any deaths.
The mission added that a rescue operation carried out by a private company resulted in the rescue of six people from the sea.
On the other hand, the Houthis said in a statement that they had “saved” a number of crew and were transferred to a “safe place”, stressing that the ship was heading to the Israeli port. The group, backed by Iran, claimed that the attack was carried out using six ballistic missiles and a suit, as well as an unintended boat.
Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023, the Houthi group targets the commercial shipping ships that they claim are linked to Israel, and say its goal is to support Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The Magic Cies shipping ship also sank on July 6 after being attacked by the Houthis. The group released a video of the attack and drowned the ship on social media, and was later circulated in Greek media.
The video shows several explosions on the ship, which is 200 meters long and carry the flag of Liberia, before it gradually drowned in the water.
Ali Al -Dailami, a member of the Houthi Political Bureau, said that the attack on “Magic Cis” was a “clear deterrent message” to the countries and companies that cooperate with Israel.
The Houthis reported that they used march boats and adhesive detonators on the ship’s structure.
The European Union’s “Atalanta” operation, which is concerned with monitoring piracy in the Indian Ocean, confirmed that the attackers approached the ship with small boats, and that its 22 -people crew left after a fire on board erupted.
While the British Authority for Maritime Trade Operations reported that all crew members were rescued by a commercial ship in the region.
The Houthis pledged to continue their maritime campaign until the siege was lifted from Gaza and the Israeli military operations were stopped.
