Teenagers Ordered โคto pay $1.5 โฃMillion forโข Urinating inโข Hot Pot
Shanghai, China – โคTwo Shanghai teenagers and their parentsโ have been ordered byโค a courtโฃ to jointly pay 2.2 million yuan (approximately $310,000 USD or 9.7 million baht) in damages after they urinated โinโข aโ hot pot at a Hai Di Lao restaurant in February. Teh incident,captured in a video โคthat went viral online,sparked widespread public outrage and prompted the restaurant to fileโ a lawsuit.
The โขteenagers, identified byโ surnames Tank and Wu, reportedly climbed onto aโ tableโข and โคurinated directly into aโค shared hot pot while atโ the restaurant.โข Wuโฃ then uploaded a video of the act to the internet, further โฃfueling the controversy. Hai Di Lao estimated that over 4,000 โcustomers may have usedโฃ the contaminated hot pot in the 12 days following โthe incident, โคleadingโฃ to concerns about public health and hygiene.
The Huang pu People’s Court ruled that the teenagers and โsix parents must issue โฃa publicโ apology โคinโ print media and cover โthe restaurant’s expenses, totaling โข2.2โข million yuan. This includes 130,000โ yuan for damages to โequipment and cleaning costs, 2,000,000 yuan forโค damage to the business’s reputation, and 70,000โ yuan for legal fees. โ
Following the incident, Hai di โLao issued an apology and stated thatโข all hot pots and related โequipment โwere destroyed and thoroughly sterilized. Theโ restaurant also offered compensation to customers potentially affected by the contamination, equivalent to ten timesโ the โขcost of their meal.โ The โcase highlights the โpotential legalโข and โfinancial consequences of reckless behavior โคand the importance of โmaintaining hygiene standards in public dining establishments.
