Netanyahu’s Qatar Strike Backfires, Threatening Israel’s War Strategy

Israel‘s Strike in Doha Complicates Hostage Negotiations, Deepens domestic Divisions

DOHA, QATAR – A recent Israeli action targeting Hamas leaders based in Qatar appears to have jeopardized ongoing negotiations for the release of hostages held in Gaza, intensifying pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and sparking fears among families of the captives. The operation, confirmed Thursday, has prompted condemnation and raised questions about the future of mediation efforts.

The move represents a significant gamble by Netanyahu, who has vowed to pursue Hamas leadership irrespective of location. While Israeli officials maintain the operation was necessary to disrupt Hamas operations, analysts suggest it has undermined trust with Qatar, a key intermediary in hostage talks, and possibly stalled progress toward a ceasefire. The incident comes as Israel presses ahead with its offensive aimed at conquering Gaza City, urging the evacuation of an area holding around 1 million people.

Political scientist Gayil Talshir of Hebrew University in Jerusalem stated that only external pressure, potentially from former President Donald trump, could alter Israel’s current trajectory. However, Trump has not indicated weather he would take any punitive action against Israel or pressure Netanyahu to halt the war.

The strike has fueled growing domestic opposition to Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict, notably among the roughly two-thirds of the Israeli public who desire an end to the war and a deal to secure the release of hostages. Despite this sentiment, Netanyahu’s political future appears secure within his governing coalition, many members of which support a hardline approach.

“Netanyahu’s future in the near term doesn’t depend on the Israeli public,” said Yohanan Plesner, president of the Israel Democracy Institute. “Instead, his political survival depends on his governing coalition.”

the failed attempt to secure a deal has triggered panic among families of hostages still held in Gaza. Einav Zangauker, whose son Matan is among the captives, expressed her despair this week, stating,”Why does the prime minister insist on blowing up every chance for a deal? Why?”

israel has dismissed calls from the United nations, the European Union, and a growing number of Western countries to halt the war, even as some nations plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the U.N. Security Council later this month.Netanyahu has threatened further action if Qatar continues to host Hamas leadership, declaring, “Ther is no place where we cannot reach you.”

Qatar PM: Israel’s leaders ‘do not care’ about hostages in Gaza

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 12, 2025

Qatar‘s Prime Minister Accuses Israel of Disregarding ⁤Hostage Lives

DOHA, QATAR – Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman ‍Al ‌Thani sharply criticized Israel on Thursday, asserting ‌that Israeli⁢ leaders “do not care” about the ⁣hostages held in Gaza. The statement comes amid stalled negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage release deal, and following a reported Israeli strike in Doha.

Al Thani’s remarks reflect growing frustration with the ongoing impasse,as mediators-including Qatar,Egypt, and the United States-struggle to bridge⁣ the gap between Israel’s demands⁣ and Hamas’s conditions.Qatar has played a key role in past hostage negotiations, facilitating the release of some captives⁣ in November 2023.

Hamas‌ claimed its ⁣senior leaders survived the Doha strike, but five lower-level members and a Qatari security officer were‌ killed in the ⁢attack. Funerals ⁢for the deceased were held Thursday, attended by Qatar’s ruling emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Hamas has a history of⁤ delaying confirmation of leader ⁤assassinations.

The United Arab Emirates also issued a ‍warning Thursday, stating that further “provocative and unfriendly rhetoric” from Israel threatens regional stability and “pushes the region towards extremely‌ hazardous trajectories.” The UAE considers aggression against any Gulf Cooperation Council member-including⁣ Qatar-an‍ attack on collective Gulf security.Despite being a signatory to the 2020 Abraham Accords normalizing ⁤ties with Israel, the⁣ UAE recently blocked Israeli firms from participating in the Dubai Air Show.

Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians continue to flee Gaza City anticipating an Israeli offensive. The operation aims to seize the city, already heavily damaged by ‌previous raids and facing conditions experts have described as famine. Israel denies widespread starvation, claiming sufficient‌ aid is entering Gaza and accusing Hamas of diversion. U.N. agencies dispute ‍these claims, citing Israeli restrictions and the ⁢ongoing offensive as obstacles to aid delivery.

Israel faces global condemnation over military expansion in Gaza

Global Outcry Over Gaza Offensive Amid Severe Humanitarian Crisis

International Leaders Denounce Israeli Military Actions as Palestinian Deaths Mount

A growing chorus of international condemnation met Israel’s decision to escalate military operations in Gaza City, as the territory faces dire humanitarian conditions and a rising death toll. Reports of Palestinians killed while seeking aid, coupled with increasing deaths attributed to malnutrition, underscore the deepening crisis.

Aid Seekers Targeted, Hospitals Report Fatalities

Officials at Nasser and Awda hospitals reported that at least 11 individuals seeking humanitarian assistance were fatally shot in southern and central Gaza. Witnesses described Israeli troops and tanks firing on crowds approaching aid distribution points. The Israeli military has denied opening fire and stated it was unaware of these incidents.

Diplomatic Efforts Intensify for Ceasefire and Hostage Release

Amidst the escalating violence, diplomatic channels are working towards a potential de-escalation. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff was slated to meet with Qatar’s prime minister in Spain to discuss a new proposal aimed at ending the conflict. Mediators Egypt and Qatar are reportedly crafting a framework that would secure the release of all hostages, both living and deceased, in exchange for a cessation of hostilities and Israeli troop withdrawal.

Hostage Families Urge Action Amidst Deepening Fears

Families of hostages held in Gaza are intensifying their pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s government. With approximately 50 hostages remaining, and an estimated 20 believed to be alive, anxieties are mounting. The living will be murdered and the fallen will be lost forever if the offensive proceeds, stated Einav Zangauker, whose son Matan is among those held captive. She urged a nationwide shutdown to compel action.

Widespread Condemnation of Military Escalation

A joint statement from nine nations, including Germany, Britain, France, and Canada, forcefully rejected Israel’s planned military operation, warning it would exacerbate the already catastrophic humanitarian situation, endanger hostages, and increase the risk of mass displacement. They reiterated that any attempts at annexation or settlement in Gaza violate international law. More than 20 countries, including ceasefire mediators Egypt and Qatar, along with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, labeled Israel’s decision a dangerous and unacceptable escalation.

UN Security Council Convenes Emergency Meeting

The United Nations Security Council scheduled an emergency session to address the escalating situation. Germany has also announced it will halt exports of military equipment to Israel that could be used in Gaza until further notice.

Airdrops Offer Glimmer of Hope Amid Degrading Conditions

While airdrops of aid continue, with Italy and Greece joining the effort, recipients describe the process as undignified. Hundreds gathered to collect supplies, with many forced to scramble for food that spilled onto the ground. Aid organizations have criticized airdrops as costly, insufficient, and perilous. This way is not for humans, it is for animals, one recipient lamented, detailing a stabbing incident during the chaotic distribution.

Barefoot children gather rice, pasta, and lentils that fell from airdropped aid packages onto the Gaza ground, highlighting the desperate conditions.

Malnutrition Deaths Rise as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that the number of adult deaths from malnutrition-related causes has reached 114 since June. The ministry also stated that 98 children have died from similar causes since the conflict began on October 7, 2023. This toll does not include the broader war casualties, which the ministry puts at over 61,300 Palestinians. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan accused Israel of forcing Palestinians into a state of near-starvation to the point that they abandon their land voluntarily.

The United Nations and independent experts consider Gaza’s Health Ministry figures the most reliable source on war casualties, although Israel disputes these figures without providing its own.

Israel says Hamas is starving hostages; Security Council members say Israel is starving Palestinians

Hostage Ordeal Sparks U.N. Security Council Debate Amid Gaza Famine Fears

Israel demands release of captives; world body grapples with widespread hunger in the Strip

Israel convened an urgent United Nations Security Council session, highlighting the dire condition of its hostages, including one depicted digging his own grave. While their plight garnered international sympathy, the escalating starvation crisis affecting two million Palestinians in Gaza overshadowed the proceedings.

Accusations Fly Over Aid and Propaganda

Many council members, alongside Palestinian representatives, attributed the severe food shortages in Gaza to Israel’s two-month blockade and insufficient aid entry. Gaza’s health ministry reports over 100 starvation-related deaths, many of them children. Israeli Foreign Minister **Gideon Saar**, present for the meeting, accused unnamed council members and global media of spreading “lies.” He contrasted the hostages’ alleged deprivation with Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters enjoying ample food, a claim that U.N. spokesman **Stephane Dujarric** stated lacks evidence.

Saar asserted that Israel is permitting substantial aid into Gaza, alleging Hamas diverts and profits from these supplies. He also characterized Palestinian claims of terrorism as manufactured and accused Hamas of seeking to prolong the conflict rather than agree to a ceasefire. “It’s a world in which Israel is put on a bench of the accused while it fights for its survival,” Saar declared, labeling such sentiment as antisemitism.

Relatatives Appeal for Hostage Release

The emotional weight of the hostages’ situation was underscored by testimonies from their families. Itay David, brother of hostage Evyatar David, shared a harrowing account of his sibling, who appeared gaunt and was shown digging what was described as his own grave. “Do not let them die. We don’t have time. Do not let them spend another minute in darkness,” Itay David pleaded with the council members via video briefing.

He described his brother as a “living skeleton,” detailing the psychological and physical torment inflicted by Hamas, which has denied the hostages basic necessities. British U.N. Ambassador Barbara Woodward echoed calls for the immediate release of all hostages, condemning the propaganda use of their images as a “depraved” act. She stated, “Hamas and its terrorist ideologies can have no place in the future governance of Gaza and should never again threaten Israel’s security.”

Woodward recalled a prior ceasefire that facilitated hostage exchanges and increased aid to Gaza. “Since the ceasefire ended, the suffering of the hostages and Palestinian civilians has plumbed to new and shocking depths,” she observed. She added, “Israel’s aid restrictions have led to famine now unfolding in Gaza,” citing reports from international famine monitoring experts.

Speaking with doctors who served in Gaza, Woodward reported seeing children so malnourished their wounds festered for months. She also mentioned instances of baby formula being confiscated by the Israeli military. “I call on Israel now to act to alleviate the horrendous suffering,” she urged.

Global Concerns Over Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis

Sierra Leone’s U.N. ambassador, Michael Imran Kanu, acknowledged Itay David‘s advocacy and condemned the “inhumane treatment” of hostages, calling their capture a war crime. However, he cautioned, “One atrocity cannot justify another.”

Kanu continued, “While we express deep concern for the hostages, we cannot ignore the wider humanitarian catastrophe that has engulfed Gaza. The people of Gaza have been subjected to a blockade and siege that deprived them of food, water, fuel and medical supplies,” conditions he suggested could also constitute war crimes.

Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea noted President Trump’s acknowledgment of “real starvation” in Gaza and affirmed the U.S. efforts to deliver assistance. She encouraged support for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an Israeli-backed U.S. contractor, which reportedly distributed over 1.5 million meals on Sunday, despite hundreds of Palestinians being killed en route to its distribution sites.

Palestinian U.N. ambassador Riyad Mansour addressed the video of Evyatar David, stating, “We reject all inhumane and degrading treatment against anyone, especially persons held in captivity.”

In a pointed critique, Mansour argued, “Israel is demanding the world to take a stance against starvation when it is actually starving an entire civilian population, when it is shooting at them while they seek water and food.” This exchange reflects the deep divisions and competing narratives surrounding the conflict’s humanitarian toll. According to the World Food Programme, over half a million people in Gaza are now facing catastrophic levels of hunger, with the situation worsening due to limited access to food and clean water (World Food Programme, 2024).
