Recent Outbreak of Chickenpox in Military Establishment and Educational Institutions

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 9, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

All cases are in isolation, none were serious. To date, 41 cases of chickenpox have been identified in the military establishment, five of them have already been discharged. Four educational institutions in the area are also affected, where 5 students with chickenpox were detected, the majority from Kindergarten and Preschool. As a result of the identified cases, the preventive isolation of about 200 children, adolescents and teachers who were exposed to the cases was carried out and vaccination was carried out.

Recently, 5 new cases of chickenpox were confirmed at the Encarnación Military College for NCOs (COMISOE), located in the district of San Juan del Paraná, department of Itapúa. With this, there are 41 affected registered to date in the military establishment, of which 5 were discharged and 36 remain in isolation.
Thus, 5 cases of infection were also identified in four educational institutions in the area. Among those affected are two students between the ages of 12 and 16, and three children between the ages of 4 and 6. The last two cases were identified through the father of the family, who works as a caregiver for the elderly and recently called in sick.
All positive cases of chickenpox are currently in isolation and under follow-up; most were not vaccinated. As a result of the outbreak detected in educational establishments, preventive contact isolation of all students and teachers of the affected grades was recommended, close to 200 in total; Likewise, the continuity of classes virtually, as well as vaccination for all those who do not have the respective doses and do not have a history of chickenpox.
Dr. María Pastora Duarte, head of Itapúa’s Epidemiological Surveillance, pointed out that they will continue with visits to educational and other public institutions to raise awareness about this contagious disease, as well as to capture possible cases. She regretted that, in most of the cases of chickenpox detected, the boys and girls continued to attend school with symptoms of disease, believing that it was a skin allergy.
He emphasized that it is extremely important that cases of chickenpox are detected in the office to assess the severity of the condition, identify warning signs and receive appropriate treatment. “We are interested in the patient reaching the health service to carry out the follow-up and the corresponding interventions, and to detect any sign of seriousness in time,” she said.
The health professional insists on going to the consultation in the presence of fever and skin rashes; likewise, to update the vaccination schedule for boys and girls. He recalled that the chickenpox vaccine is free and is available in Public Health services. This vaccine is applied at 15 months of life and the booster at 5 years of age. He also commented that an immunization strategy called “Vaccine Recovery System” is being carried out, which consists of the application of doses to boys and girls up to 10 years of age who have not yet been vaccinated, including against chickenpox.
Let’s remember that chickenpox, after 21 days of exposure, can cause the disease.
chicken pox
It is a contagious disease, caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV) characterized by skin rashes.
It appears with rashes on the stomach, back and face, which can spread to the whole body producing itchy blisters. Other symptoms of this virus are tiredness, headache and fever.
In the event of presenting any of these symptoms, it is recommended to immediately seek medical advice to receive timely treatment and avoid self-medication.
It is important to avoid coming to work sick; It is also not advisable to take children to school or daycare in these conditions.
In case of contracting chickenpox

The Epidemiological Situation of Respiratory Viruses and Arboviruses: Significant Decrease in Cases

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com July 8, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

In a press conference held this Friday, July 7, Dr. Guillermo Sequera, General Director of Health Surveillance, announced the epidemiological situation with respect to respiratory viruses and arboviruses, which show a significant decrease in cases, although they continue to present and affecting the vulnerable population, mainly.

Regarding Covid-19, it reported a significant decrease in the last week. In the accumulated total of the last eight weeks (EW 19/2023 to EW 26/2023), 1,235 cases were confirmed in 11 of the 18 health regions of the country. The incidence rate of the last 14 days is 2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per week, mainly affecting the population aged 60 and over (39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).

“Due to Covid-19, we have seen a very significant decrease in the last week, although every week there are deaths, especially those over 70 to 80 years of age. Covid-19 is not one of the ones that is circulating the most, but it is a virus that continues to admit patients and kill, and it is a virus for which we have a vaccine,” Sequera remarked, encouraging citizens to protect themselves through vaccination.

Regarding the other respiratory viruses, a small decrease is also observed, but they continue.

“In relation to ETIs -influenza-like diseases-, we are above the alert threshold, but with a slight decrease,” he said, recalling that we have a vaccine for influenza A and B and we are still in the vaccination period, within the framework of of the “Winter 2023” campaign, which runs until the 14th of this month.

Likewise, he recalled the importance of the proper use of masks, especially in hospitals, taking into account that patients with diseases such as cancer must take care of infections. “If I am sick with a respiratory virus, I stay home. If I have to go out, I wear a mask to take care of others and avoid spreading the virus, ”he explained, while reiterating the importance of observing the etiquette of coughing and sneezing, as well as ventilating the environments.

With regard to arboviral diseases, he maintained that both dengue and chikungunya show a decrease in cases, although in an almost atypical way for this time of year, perhaps related to weather conditions.

“A month and a half ago, we had more than 400 to 500 confirmed cases of chikungunya. Last week we are closing 100 confirmed cases. It’s still a lot for this time of year. In dengue we see a decrease, but we still have more than 60 cases”, the doctor pointed out, detailing that in hospitalized there is also a significant decrease. Of 150 hospitalizations for chikungunya weeks ago, today there are between 7 and 12. “Last week we have not reported deaths, that is something positive,” he concluded.

The Inclusion of Hexavalent Vaccine in Paraguay: Facts, Application, and Digital Vaccination Booklet

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 30, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The incorporation of the hexavalent vaccine to the regular vaccination scheme, free of charge for the entire population, is a fact that helps in the universality of services and health equity for the population. Hexavalent protects against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae B, and poliomyelitis.

The application of the vaccine began on Monday, June 19, it is administered to those born from April 2023 onwards, at 2, 4, 6 and 18 months of life.

Figures from the Expanded Immunization Program indicate that, so far, 3,355 vaccines have been applied to boys and girls throughout the country, highlighting that 52 children who had started schemes in the private sector are incorporated into the public system.

What happens to those born before April 2023?

Boys and girls who were born before April 2023, and who have already received the pentavalent and anti-polio vaccine, should continue with the vaccination schedule they have started, since they protect against the same diseases as the hexavalent vaccine, and it is not planned interchangeability.

As for the boy or girl who has started their hexavalent vaccination scheme in the private sector, who already had this vaccine, they can complete it in any of the public services.

Digital vaccination booklet

The children’s vaccination booklet can be obtained digitally, following these steps:

1. You can access the record of the vaccination book, through the page Paraguay.gov.py. It is necessary to have created the electronic identity. If you do not have it, you can create it, completing all the required information in the same link and, later, you will be able to access your son or daughter’s vaccination booklet.

2. If you already have an account or created one recently, when you log in, enter “My Documents”, there you will find the HEALTH section, in the section “Vaccination Book Certificate-Children”, when you click, you will automatically be able to access to your son or daughter’s vaccination record.

3. If the data from the children’s vaccination records is incomplete, the parents should go to a health service, with the physical notebook, so that those in charge of the health region, from any part of the country, can transcribe the records. those records and thus have the book complete and updated.

4. Once the document is generated, the name of your son or daughter should appear. If you have more than one child, select the one for whom you want to obtain the certificate. If, when generating the document, you receive a message that it is not possible to find data, it is possibly because the personal records of the children are not linked to the ID number of the parents, so if this happens, you should go to a service of health, requesting that said data be linked. Once updated, wait 12 hours for the servers to be refreshed, and repeat the entire previous process to obtain the notebook.

5. Once the data has been verified, the document is generated and is ready to be downloaded in PDF format.

“Protect Yourself Against Influenza: Winter 2023 Campaign and Timely Immunization”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 7, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Timely immunization is essential to avoid the exponential increase in respiratory conditions in our country.

Taking advantage of the “Winter 2023 Campaign” is the best option to increase the body’s defenses against these diseases.

Influenza is a viral infection that mainly affects the nose, throat, bronchial tubes, and occasionally the lungs. It is easily transmitted from one person to another through droplets and small particles expelled by coughing or sneezing.

The main symptoms of influenza, to which attention should be paid, are fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches and headaches, chills, fatigue and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea.

There are also warning signs to be aware of:

IN CHILDREN

  • Troubled breathing or shortness of breath.
  • Bluish color of the skin.
  • You are not drinking enough fluids.
  • He doesn’t wake up easily or interact with other people.
  • He’s so upset that he doesn’t want to be picked up.
  • You have flu symptoms that get better, but come back with a fever and worsening cough.
  • Fever with rash.

IN ADULTS

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen.
  • sudden dizziness
  • Confusion.
  • Forceful or constant vomiting.

An effective way to protect against the growth of cases is through vaccination. The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare is urged to take advantage of the “Winter 2023 Campaign” to reduce the risk of serious cases, with the quadrivalent dose against influenza.

Getting vaccinated reduces the risk of intensive care unit admission by up to 74% in children and 82% in adults.

It should be remembered that the vaccine is free for the entire population, mainly for people in risk groups:

  • Children from 6 to 35 months of age.
  • Health workers.
  • Embarrassed, puerperal.
  • People with underlying disease.
  • People aged 60 and over.
