Reducing Hospitalizations and Deaths with Annual Influenza and COVID-19 Vaccinations

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 13, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

In the last one, a decrease in the demand for consultations due to influenza-type illness was observed. Accessing annual vaccination against influenza and COVID-19 reduces the risk of hospitalization and death from these diseases.

In the last week (SE) 43, consultations for influenza-type illness (ILI) have registered a decrease of 14%, compared to the previous week, going from 24,259 to 21,080, from one week to the next, indicates the weekly report of Sentinel Surveillance. Despite this decrease, the trend curve remains above the alert threshold.

Regarding those hospitalized for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), in the sentinel centers there was a slight decrease in new hospitalizations, compared to the previous week. In the last week evaluated, 312 hospitalizations for SARI were registered, of which 51% correspond to pediatric age; 51% being children under 2 years old, and 49% adults.

Among the respiratory viruses identified in the last week in patients hospitalized for acute respiratory infections, the circulation of SARS-CoV2 predominates, followed by Rhinovirus, Parainfluenza and Metapneumovirus.

Annual vaccination is important

Having the annual dose of the influenza and COVID-19 vaccine is key to reducing the risk of hospitalizations and deaths associated with these diseases that circulate all year round.

Citizens, mainly priority groups, are urged to apply their annual dose of protection.

Thus, it is also important to keep children’s regular vaccination schedule up to date, especially those under 5 years of age.

If you have respiratory symptoms

Use face masks.

Go to the doctor’s consultation and comply with the indicated rest to avoid infecting others.

Avoid going to work, study or daycare sick. It is also not advisable with respiratory symptoms to attend meetings or places with a high concentration of people.

Alarming Drop in COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage: Importance of the Bivalent Vaccine

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 29, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Cases of the disease are increasing; only 5% of the population received the bivalent vaccine. The group of those under 18 years of age is the most unprotected, with coverage of 1% and 2%. Meanwhile, the percentage of vaccinated in older people ranges between 10% and 14%.

Data from the Expanded Program on Immunizations (EPI) show an alarming drop in vaccination coverage against COVID-19, mainly with the bivalent vaccine, applied annually.

So far, in the country only 5% of the population has agreed to apply the protective dose. The poor immunization against this infection puts a significant number of people at risk, mainly the group at risk of contracting severe forms of COVID-19.

The groups from 5 to 11 years old and from 12 to 17 years old achieved a vaccination coverage of just 1% and 2%, respectively. From 60 years of age and older, the percentage of vaccinated ranges between 10% and 14%.

On the other hand, in the youth group between 18 and 29 years old, vaccination rates range from 3% to 5%.

The health portfolio emphasizes the importance of having the annual vaccine against COVID-19, taking into account that the curve of cases is gaining strength and that hospitalizations and deaths are being recorded, mainly at the extremes of life, without precedent. vaccination with the annual dose.

Those people who have not yet received the bivalent vaccine are urged to go to the nearest vaccination center.

The bivalent vaccine protects against the original Wuhan variant and against the omicron variant. The vaccine is safe, effective and free.

The Importance of COVID-19 Vaccination for Children and the Elderly: Access and Protection

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 19, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Expanded Program on Immunizations (EPI) remembers that access to vaccination against COVID-19, mainly at the extremes of life such as children and the elderly, is essential.

Immunization not only reduces the possibility of developing severe forms of the disease, but also of hospitalization and death.

According to the latest report from the General Directorate of Health Surveillance, there is an increase in hospitalizations in the age group of 65 years and over, due to COVID-19, which is why the health portfolio considers it extremely important that those who are are in the vulnerability category receive the bivalent vaccine to be protected.

The country’s vaccination centers have the doses to immunize the population, it is important that both boys, girls, adults and older people have the protection provided by the vaccine.

The Expanded Immunization Program (EPI) aims to reach more than 389,764 people aged 60 and over, who have not yet received their annual dose of the bivalent vaccine. Coverage in this group is approximately 30% to date.

It should be remembered that longevity generates a progressive loss of natural immunity, so vaccination is essential in this age group, which generally suffers from one or two chronic diseases and needs to prevent or avoid serious forms of respiratory diseases.

Paraguay has the bivalent vaccine against COVID-19 that protects against the original Wuhan variant and against the omicron variant, it is a single and annual dose. This protection strategy seeks to save lives and avoid complications from diseases that can be prevented through vaccines.

People over 60 years of age and pregnant women are at greater risk of developing severe symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza, if they become infected. The virus is still among us and approaching the vaccination center to protect yourself and others can make a difference.

Training on Analysis and Use of Electronic Vaccination Registry (RVE) for Improved Immunization Coverage

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 6, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) began a series of training sessions on the Analysis and Use of Information from the Electronic Vaccination Registry (RVE) in the Central and Caaguazú departments. These training days, which have the support of the Project Strengthening the Response against COVID-19 (MSPyBS, USAID, CIRD), will last three weeks, also covering Itapúa and Alto Paraná.

With these trainings, the EPI seeks to strengthen the knowledge and the correct mechanisms for the Electronic Vaccination Registry (RVE), and improve the quality of the registered data. It also aims to generate the systematic analysis of the system information to serve as support for operational decision-making at the local level. In this way, a better approach to the target population will be promoted to increase vaccination coverage.

The conferences are aimed at those in charge of loading the Nominal Vaccination Registry of the health services in the different districts of the 4 aforementioned departments. Data loading is sometimes carried out by operators who are exclusively dedicated to this work and other times by vaccinators or heads of the health service.

The technicians from the Information Sub-System Department and EPI national supervisors are in charge of the training, where vaccination coverage indicators are analyzed in order to identify difficulties and opportunities. In this way, it seeks to improve the strategy of those responsible for immunization days when establishing vaccination goals and strategies.
