Gemelli Hospital Breaks Ground on โขNew โฌ22โฃ Million โฃCardiovascularโ Center
Construction has begun on a new 22,000โฃ square meter cardiovascular center at rome’s Gemelli Hospital, spearheaded by Professorโ Massimo Massetti, Directorโ of the Department of cardiovascular Sciences – Heart. The project, undertaken by Webuild, aimsโค to consolidate all cardiovascular activities into a single, state-of-the-art facility on the Catholic University โcampus, adjacent to the emergency room, with completion expected within three โฃyears.
The initiative โคresponds to โขthe notable impact of cardiovascular diseases in Italy,which account for roughly one in three deaths – approximately 220-230,000 โannually -โฃ and are the leading cause of โmortality โขnationwide. Hospital officials emphasize the need for โdedicated infrastructure and interventions beyond โฃprevention and therapy to address this growing “silent epidemic.”
The โnew “Cuore Polo” (Heart Pole) is designed to move beyond fragmented care pathways, offering an integrated, personalized, and effective patient experiance. The structure, designed by Binini Partnersโฃ Studio, โwill span six โคfloors and encompass 27,000 square meters. It will feature:
* 104 standard hospital โbeds
* 29 intensive care unit places
* 16 day Hospital โคstations
* 24 multidisciplinary clinics
* โฃ โข10 operating rooms (including 2 hybrid rooms)
* A diagnostic department equippedโ withโ advanced cardiovascular imaging technology
* Telemedicine โclinics
*โ Eco-enduring, โฃantibacterial, and self-sanitizing materials
Once operational, the center isโฃ projected โto handle approximately:
* 2,000 angioplasties annually
* 4,000 coronarographies annually
* โค 800 device implantations annually
* โ1,000 cardiac surgeries annually
* 800 electrophysiological studies annually
* 400 transcatheter valve interventions annually
* Tens of thousands of outpatient and telemedicine appointments annually
the Rome private Authority, a non-profit associative organization, has significantlyโฃ contributed to the funding of the Cuore Polo project.
Professorโ Massetti described the center as “an innovative โcare model” built around aโ technologically advanced hospital within the National Health โService, aiming to improve bothโค the quality and accessibility of cardiovascular care.Regional โCouncil President Antonello Aurigemma highlighted the importance of prevention,noting the regional council’sโฃ ongoing “healthy advice” program – a free prevention initiative โฃ- and pledged continued support for such projects to โpromote early diagnosis and well-being.
