HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Honolulu police have confirmed the deaths of two 18-year-old men who were found unresponsive in waters off Kaena Point on Saturday morning. police are investigating โthe incident as two unattended death โขcases.
The men were fishing on the rocks nearโฃ Kaena Pointโ when one was swept into the ocean. The otherโฃ attempted aโ rescue, but neither man returned to shore. Thier identities have notโข yet been released.
Friends and family members gathered at the site on Sunday, leaving flowers but declining to comment.
“They’reโ fellow fishermen, you never expect to go out fishing and โฃthat might be your last day,” said Jon Kanno, who witnessed the rescue efforts while fishing in the area.
Kanno recalled crews searching for approximately half an hour before recovering the men.โ
“Tough to watch, as โขyou know, whenโ you’re out in the ocean for that long especiallyโ in โคan area like โขthat, โขthings don’t really look too hopeful a lot of times because of how rough and unsafe the conditions can be, even if it looks calm,” Kanno added.
The โincident echoes โaโ 2019 โtragedy at the same location,โฃ where โ21-year-old โคZena Gran and her friend, โ20-year-old Diego Medina, โboth drowned after being โคswept out to sea.
Several frequent visitors to Kaena Point โnoted the area’s perhaps dangerous โocean conditions.”I’ve seen waves come 10, 15โ feet over the โขhead of people on the rocks,” saidโข Leslieโค Titcomb. “I’ve โcome here atโข least 100 โขtimes and there’s always โคbig waves โขcoming up.”
Kimo Napolitano added, “It looks all calm on the top, but the undertowโฃ is what gets you. And then you โคknow, if there’s โฃno help, it’sโฃ pretty desolate out here, but, we try to keep an โeye on each other.”
The Honolulu Police Department stated there areโฃ currently no indications of suspicious activity or foul play.Copyright โ2025 โHawaii Newsโ Now. All rights reserved.
