Trump Directs Witkoff to Meet Putin as Ukraine Peace Talks Gain Traction
GENEVA โ – Former President Donald Trumpโ has instructed โreal estate developer Don Witkoff to meet with Russian President โคVladimir Putin, as momentum builds in ongoing discussions aimed at achieving a peacefulโ resolution to teh conflict in โUkraine. The directive comes amid a flurryโฃ of diplomatic โactivity,โ includingโค talks held Sunday in Geneva between top US andโ European officials.
The โขmove signals a potential โคshift in backchannel effortsโ to negotiate an end to the โwar, tho the specifics of Witkoff’s roleโ and the scope of his discussions remain unclear. Concurrently, the โEuropean โคUnion has laid out firm red lines for any potential agreement, emphasizing Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereign right to self-defense, and its future integration with โขEurope. these developments occur as Ukraine continues to reject Russian demandsโข for territorial concessions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previouslyโค dismissed Russia’s proposals to cedeโ the eastern Donbas region in exchange for portions of the โขsouthern Khersonโ and Zaporizhzhia regions currently held by Russia.
theโ EU’s three core principles, articulated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are that Ukraine’sโ “borders โขcannot beโค changedโค by force,” that limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces that would leave the country vulnerable to future attack are unacceptable, and that ukraine must retain โthe freedom to choose its own destiny, including full integration โinto Europe’sโข single market and defenseโ industrial โขbase.
Von derโ Leyen stated Sunday, “Second, asโฃ a sovereign nation, there cannot be limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces that would leave the country vulnerable to future attack and thereby also undermining Europeanโ security.” She concluded, “Third, โฃthe โฃcentrality of the European Union in securing peace for Ukraine must โคbe fully reflected. Ukraineโข must have โฃtheโ freedom and sovereign right โขtoโข choose its own destiny. They have chosen a European destiny.”
