Frederiksen: US Attack on Greenland Would End NATO

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 14, 2026

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated on Saturday that a U.S. Attack on Greenland to gain control of the island would effectively finish the NATO alliance. “If a NATO country attacks another NATO country, NATO is finished. Game over,” Frederiksen declared, speaking at the Munich Security Conference alongside the presidents of Finland and Spain, Alexander Stubb and Pedro Sánchez, as well as U.S. Senator Chris Coons.

Frederiksen’s comments reach amid ongoing, though recently less overt, tensions with the Trump administration regarding Greenland. According to recent reports, President Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland has not diminished, despite scaling back threats of forceful seizure. Frederiksen lamented that the crisis remains unresolved, stating, “The crisis, unfortunately, is not over. The president’s desire is still the same, and everyone is in disagreement – the Kingdom of Denmark, Europe, and even some American friends.”

The Danish Prime Minister emphasized the fundamental principles at stake, asserting that Greenland is not for sale. “You cannot put a price on Greenland any more than you can put a price on a part of Spain,” she said. “It is one of the most basic democratic principles: respecting the sovereignty of states and respecting the principle of self-determination. They want to be a Greenlandic people, not Americans.”

Frederiksen too received praise from allies for Denmark’s firm stance against U.S. Pressure, with reports indicating collective support from European and global partners in defending Denmark and Greenland’s sovereignty. The situation highlights a significant point of contention within the transatlantic alliance, as the U.S. Continues to express interest in the strategically important territory.
