Crusaders Suffer Historic Home Defeat to Brumbies in Super Rugby Upset

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 22, 2026

Christchurch, New Zealand – The ACT Brumbies delivered a stunning 50-24 victory over the Canterbury Crusaders on Sunday, marking their first win in Christchurch since 2000 and inflicting the Crusaders’ largest home defeat in 23 years.

The defending Super Rugby Pacific champions, coming off a surprise loss to the Highlanders in Dunedin, conceded eight tries to four in a disjointed performance that echoed struggles from their 2024 season. The 50 points conceded equaled the most the Crusaders have allowed at home since 2001 and represented their second-largest home defeat in the competition’s 30-year history, according to Newsdirectory3.com.

Despite trailing 19-14 at halftime, playing against a strong breeze, the Brumbies seized control in the second half with a dominant attacking display. Veteran prop James Slipper, playing his 200th Super Rugby match, scored a try before being forced off with an injury. The Brumbies’ bonus-point victory places them at the top of the Super Rugby Pacific standings, level with the New South Wales Waratahs, who defeated the Fijian Drua 36-13 on Friday.

Crusaders captain David Havili described the performance as “frustrating,” acknowledging his team’s struggles at the breakdown. “We lost the breakdown again and once you get behind the Brumbies are a tough team to stop,” he said, adding, “There were a lot of mistakes from us.”

The Brumbies’ success follows a recent trend of breaking long-standing losing streaks in New Zealand, having ended a 12-year losing record against the Auckland Blues at Eden Park last year, as reported by Reuters.

The Crusaders’ discipline was repeatedly tested, with lock Antonio Shalfoon receiving a yellow card in the first half for offside, following a team warning, and flanker Dom Gardiner receiving one in the second half for a high tackle. The home side also lost the penalty count 10-5. Tries for the Crusaders came from Havili, Bell, Reece, and Faingaanuku, but were insufficient to counter the Brumbies’ relentless attack.

Brumbies tries were scored by Muirhead, Slipper, Cale (two), Pritchard, Bowron, Valetini, and Toole. Lonergan and Edmed successfully converted the Brumbies’ tries, even as Kemara converted for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders’ next match is a trip to Hamilton to face the Chiefs on Saturday night. The Chiefs secured a 26-23 win over the Highlanders on Saturday, while the Hurricanes defeated Moana Pasifika 52-10 in Wellington. The Auckland Blues also secured their first win of the season, beating the Western Force 42-32 in Perth.

All Blacks’ Angus Ta’avao Announces Son Leo’s Death

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 18, 2026

Former All Blacks prop Angus Ta’avao has publicly shared the devastating news of his eight-year-aged son, Leo’s, death following a short illness. Ta’avao announced the loss on social media today, describing his heartbreak and the profound impact Leo had on his life.

“We are heartbroken to share that our beautiful boy Leo has gained his angel wings,” Ta’avao wrote. “After a brief battle in PICU [Pediatric Intensive Care Unit], Leo passed away surrounded by his loved ones.”

Leo was born with partial trisomy 13, a rare genetic disorder that significantly impacted his development. He spent the first three months of his life in hospital, a period that deeply shaped the family’s perspective, according to Ta’avao.

In a 2018 interview with Stuff, when Leo was 14 months old, Ta’avao spoke of the joy his son brought him, describing Leo as a source of strength and inspiration. “If I’m having a difficult day, seeing him makes it all better,” he said. “The smile he gives us, gets me. It sounds so cliché, but when I see that, it melts my heart.”

Ta’avao, currently playing for the Highlanders after previous stints with the Chiefs and Blues, played in the Highlanders’ recent victory over the Crusaders on Friday night. The news of Leo’s passing has prompted a wave of support from within the rugby community.

All Blacks vice-captain Ardie Savea expressed his condolences, writing: “Praying and thinking of you and the family, uso.”

The Highlanders organization has yet to release an official statement regarding the tragedy, and Ta’avao has not indicated when he will return to play.

Fabian Holland Injury: All Black Lock to Miss Super Rugby Pacific Start

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 10, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Fabian Holland, a rising star for the Highlanders and the All Blacks, will miss the start of the Super Rugby Pacific season after dislocating his shoulder in a pre-season match against Moana Pasifika in Queenstown over the weekend. The 23-year-old lock suffered the injury during a ruck in the Highlanders’ victory, assistant coach Ben Smith confirmed on Monday.

Smith stated the shoulder was successfully relocated shortly after the incident and that initial X-rays did not reveal any fractures. The length of Holland’s recovery remains uncertain, presenting a significant setback for both the Highlanders and the All Blacks.

Holland’s emergence as a key player for the All Blacks last year, following his Test debut against France in Dunedin, had been a major positive for the national side. His hard work and resilience alongside captain Scott Barrett quickly established him as a valuable asset.

The injury compounds a growing list of concerns for the Highlanders, who are already without Dylan Pledger, a promising halfback. Pledger ruptured his ACL during training last month and will be sidelined for the entire year, potentially delaying his opportunity to contend for a spot in an All Blacks squad.

The setback for Holland arrives as Blues and All Blacks lock Patrick Tuipulotu continues his recovery from a shoulder injury that required surgery. Tuipulotu was initially named in the All Blacks’ complete-of-year tour squad but was subsequently withdrawn, and is expected to return to play in mid-April, according to reports.

Adding to the complexity of the All Blacks’ forward pack, Scott Barrett is currently on a non-playing sabbatical, which will keep him out of action for much of the season. This absence comes ahead of the inaugural Nations Championship in July, featuring Tests against France, Italy, and Ireland, followed by a challenging tour of South Africa in August and September.

Competition for second-row positions within the All Blacks remains strong, with Tupou Vaa’i and Josh Lord of the Chiefs, and Sam Darry of the Blues, all vying for selection.

The Highlanders, under head coach Jamie Joseph, whose future with the franchise is currently uncertain amid speculation he has applied for the vacant All Blacks head coach position, will begin their Super Rugby Pacific campaign by hosting the reigning champion Crusaders in Dunedin on Friday night.
