US Envoy’s Lebanon Visit Sparks Resistance Bloc Criticism
MP Hamada Decries “Stick and Carrot” Policy Amid Regional Tensions
A prominent member of the “Al-Wafa Resistance” bloc has sharply criticized the recent visit of American envoy Thomas Barak, characterizing US foreign policy as a modern blend of reassurances and veiled threats.
Resistance Bloc Views US as Regional Adversary
MP Ihab Hamada told “Sputnik” radio that Hezbollah does not perceive the United States as an impartial mediator. Instead, he stated, Washington is seen as having a vested interest in the region, with Israel acting as its proxy.
Hamada articulated that the consistent American objective involves undermining regional power centers. In Lebanon, this is pursued through a dual approach of incentives and pressure, commonly known as the “stick and carrot” method.
Lebanon Demands Israeli Withdrawal Amidst Political Maneuvering
The Lebanese stance, as presented by President Joseph Aoun, is unequivocal. Hamada emphasized that this position prioritizes Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory, aligning with core tenets of UN Resolution 1701. He noted that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri’s commentary supports this initiative, and that other pronouncements hold no significance for their bloc.
Fear of “Demilitarized Zone” Strategy
Hamada highlighted concerns over escalating pressure tactics, suggesting they aim to facilitate Israeli regional dominance. He warned that this could lead to the imposition of a “demilitarized zone” concept, reminiscent of practices in the West Bank, which he equated to a form of geographical occupation.
Warning Against Civil Strife
The MP dismissed any notion of confrontation with the Lebanese army as mere theatrics. He issued a stark warning that any call for the forceful disarmament of the resistance would inevitably incite a civil war within Lebanon.
