Botswana Boosts Airlift Capacity with US Hercules Aircraft

Nation Set to Receive Two More C-130H Transports

Botswana is on the cusp of significantly enhancing its strategic airlift capabilities, with the United States government formally notifying Congress of a proposal to donate two additional C-130H Hercules transport aircraft.

Strengthening Regional Security

The proposed donation follows the successful delivery of a C-130H Hercules in June 2024, which is already operational with the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Air Wing. The US Embassy in Botswana stated on August 5 that these aircraft would bolster Botswana’s ability to conduct humanitarian responses, peacekeeping operations, and regional security missions.

The previously donated C-130H, valued at $30 million, arrived in Botswana on May 24, 2024, and was officially handed over on June 27 at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. This asset is expected to improve Botswana’s support for both military and emergency response operations within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

A Longstanding Partnership

The BDF has a history with the C-130 platform, having operated three ex-US C-130B Hercules since 1997. These aircraft have been instrumental in various national and international missions, including UN operations in Sudan and African Union efforts. The BDF’s existing fleet has supported diverse operations, from peacekeeping to security cooperation exercises.

In addition to aircraft transfers, the defense ties between the US and Botswana were highlighted in June through a Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) exercise. US soldiers from the 3rd Special Forces Group-Airborne trained alongside the BDF Special Forces Regiment at Thebephatshwa Air Base.
