HelloFresh too Cut 900 UK Jobs as Warehouse Closure Deepens Losses
HelloFresh is setโ to close its Nuneaton distribution center, impacting nearly 900โ jobs, as the meal-kit delivery company struggles withโ ongoing market challenges in the UK. The closure,โ announced in October 2024, forms โฃpart of a wider strategy to streamline โฃoperations and consolidate fulfilment, despiteโ a recent opening of a new โautomated facility in Derby.
The move comes โขas HelloFresh reported a ยฃ14.8m operating โขloss for its UK operations in 2024, attributed primarily to non-recurring costs associated with the โNuneaton warehouse closure. The company โcitedโข a “challenging โคmarket backdrop”โค markedโ by cost-of-living pressures, โฃhigh interestโ rates, and fluctuating consumer demand, contributing to a five โขper cent decrease in turnover. Despite this, HelloFresh maintained a gross margin of 27 per cent through disciplined pricing and โขprocurement.
The 237,000 โขsqft nuneaton โsite, openedโ in โ2020 as HelloFresh’s second UK facility, will remain operational until โฃmid-2025. โ hellofresh stated the consolidation will allow it to “offer the best product toโ our customers while reducing emissions and waste” by leveraging more technologically โฃadvanced parts of its network.
The news followsโ a competitiveโข period for meal-kit โฃcompanies, with rivals like Mindful Chef returning to profit while navigating similar economic headwinds.
