Iowa Health Insurance Costs Rise: How to Navigate Changes

by Priya Shah – Business Editor November 23, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

CEDAR RAPIDS, ⁢Iowa – Hundreds of thousands of Iowans face potential increases in health ⁤insurance ⁣costs ‍as federal tax credits for the Affordable Care Act are set to expire at the end of this year. In response, Mercy⁢ Medical Center hosted a help event Saturday to assist residents in navigating⁣ the ⁢changing landscape of health insurance options.

Alan⁣ Waite, an attendee, learned his⁤ monthly ‍premium is expected to jump from $13 to $89 in 2026. “I wouldn’t have known where to go or⁢ else.‍ And I had somebody to ⁣really help me through all ‍the⁤ steps that ‍you need⁣ to go ‍through,”⁤ Waite said. “And it gives you confidence. And that’s a good feeling.”

This‌ marked the first time Mercy‌ Medical Center ‍has offered such an event, driven by a recognized need to guide individuals through their coverage choices. “This allows us to help‌ people pick out their plan, ⁤understand what goes into their plan,‌ so that ⁣they⁢ have a good plan for themselves instead of ⁤just picking something,” explained amy hosek, eligibility team ⁣manager at Mercy Medical Center. ⁢

While the expiration of federal tax credits is expected to drive up costs,‍ some individuals may still qualify for reduced coverage plans based on their income.Hosek noted that a system calculation⁢ will determine eligibility for monthly benefits.

Waite ⁣expressed concern about the financial impact on others, stating, ”Some people are going to bear some pretty ⁤heavy‍ burdens⁤ with‍ it and their financial situations. And it’s⁣ disappointing that’s ⁣going on.”

Mercy medical center will host another help event on ‌Saturday,⁣ December⁢ 13. Details can be found at https://www.mercycare.org/events/event-search-results-detail/?eventId=961d244a-48c6-f011-a87d-000d3a611ea2. Open enrollment through the marketplace closes January 15th.

Title: Student Loan Caps: How New Rules Could Affect Graduate Nursing Programs

by Priya Shah – Business Editor November 23, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

New Student Loan Rules ⁢Could Limit Funding for Nursing Students

WASHINGTON – A proposed rule change by the ⁢Department of Education could significantly impact‍ financial aid access for nursing students pursuing advanced degrees, potentially exacerbating the nationS ongoing ‌healthcare workforce shortage. The changes, slated too take effect July 1,2026,redefine ⁢which degree programs qualify for higher loan ‍limits, and nurses are not explicitly included on the initial list of “professional” degrees.

Currently, students pursuing professional degrees – such as‌ those in medicine and law – often⁢ rely ⁤on Grad PLUS loans to finance their education. The proposal eliminates the grad PLUS loan program, which the Department of Education states “has fueled unsustainable student loan borrowing.” it also introduces caps on the Parent PLUS ⁣program, limiting borrowing to $20,000 per year per student, with a total limit of $65,000.

This shift means students in programs not designated as “professional” could ‌face lower loan caps. ⁢While the Department ⁣of Education has not provided an exhaustive list, ⁣initial examples of professional degrees focus on fields⁣ like law and medicine.

The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities notes ⁢that some professions not explicitly listed could still meet ‌the regulatory requirements to be⁣ considered “professional.” Tho, programs like speech-language pathology and physical therapy are specifically cited as ⁢potentially impacted.

Nursing advocates are voicing strong concerns. Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, president of the⁤ American Nurses Association, stated, “Nurses make up the largest segment of the⁢ healthcare workforce and the backbone of⁢ our nation’s health system.‍ At a⁣ time when healthcare in our country faces a historic nurse ⁤shortage and rising demands, limiting nurses’ access to ⁢funding for‌ graduate education threatens ‍the very foundation of patient care.”

The proposed rule impacts future ⁣student loan borrowing and is part of broader adjustments to higher education finances and funding.

Hearing Aids and Dementia Prevention

Hearing⁢ Aids Linked to ⁢Significantly Lower Dementia Risk, New Study Finds

SALT LAKE CITY – A new 20-year study reveals adults who begin using hearing aids‍ before age 70 may experience‍ a 61% reduction in their risk of developing dementia. Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the research followed ⁢thousands of participants and ‍demonstrated the most significant benefits for those⁤ who addressed hearing loss early, before it became severe.

Hearing loss can manifest gradually or suddenly, according to Richard Phillips, a hearing instrument specialist with House of Hearing in Moab. untreated hearing loss forces the⁤ brain to work‍ harder to interpret sounds,⁣ potentially accelerating cognitive decline.

“Hearing loss can be gradual or ‌it can be quickly overnight,” Phillips said.

Scott Patterson, ⁤who has lived with hearing‍ loss for 20 years, initially hesitated ⁣to use hearing aids due to concerns about appearance. “I was⁢ always a little concerned about, well, I don’t want people to see that I have ⁣hearing aids, I don’t want to⁢ look older,” he recalled.

However, Patterson⁣ described a profoundly positive experience when he‍ first used them. “I still⁤ remember getting back in my car and turning on the music and almost ‍coming to tears because I coudl actually hear⁣ the full sound,”⁣ he ⁤said.

While experts emphasize that hearing aids won’t prevent all cases of dementia, they represent a simple intervention to improve communication, combat social isolation, and support long-term brain health. They‌ can also contribute to better balance, reducing the risk of falls.

“What we’ve noticed is the ones that wear them all ⁣the ⁤time, you can‍ just tell, their cognitive ⁢skills seem to be sharper, more alert,” Phillips said. “It improves your life and makes the people around you a lot happier, also.”

Health providers⁢ recommend baseline hearing tests starting around age 60, with manny clinics offering free screenings.

Liver Disease: Woman Mistaken for Having Dementia – It Was a Hidden Autoimmune Condition

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor November 22, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Woman,53,Mistakenly Thought She Had dementia – It ‍Was Liver Disease

Cambridge,UK – A 53-year-old woman,Jackie, initially believed she was developing dementia after experiencing frightening episodes where she failed to recognize⁢ loved ones, including her husband,Paul. However, the debilitating ⁣symptoms were ultimately traced to advanced liver disease, culminating in a ‌life-saving transplant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge this April.

Jackie was first diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver‍ disease in‌ 2017 following‌ a routine ⁢blood test. Further investigation revealed cirrhosis, leading to a liver biopsy in 2020 and a diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis. She was treated ⁤with prednisolone and monitored with regular scans and tests.

Until 2023, Jackie felt relatively well. However, she began ⁢experiencing increasing ‌exhaustion, even with minimal exertion. The alarming cognitive symptoms began during a clinic visit after a routine endoscopy. “I’d be exhausted just walking ⁢up the stairs. One day I had my regular endoscopy, came back into the clinic ‌and didn’t recognise Paul,” Jackie recounted. “He ⁣seemed to know⁣ who I was, and he was holding my coat, so I⁣ decided ⁤it was OK to go with him.”

The following day, she mistook her husband for a nurse and struggled to identify her stepchildren, Jack and Sophie, recognizing onyl her uncle, brothers, and son, Zachary. Initially, doctors attributed the confusion to⁢ the sedation from the endoscopy.

The episodes, ‌lasting up to ten minutes and occurring several‍ times a week, continued. Eventually, doctors resolute the symptoms were linked to her liver disease.A neurological examination revealed shaking hands, a sign of significant liver dysfunction.

“Up to 80 per cent of people with liver disease have low-level cognitive symptoms such as poor sleep or problems concentrating. But more rarely, it can mimic dementia,” explained a ⁢specialist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Jackie was placed⁤ on the ⁢transplant list and underwent a successful liver transplant in April. “When I woke up I knew it had gone,” she said. “I’d‌ felt for a long time my head was stuffed with cotton‍ wool⁢ and everything was hazy. That vanished. It ⁢was⁤ like I’d ‌had dementia and recovered.”

While Jackie will require‍ lifelong immunosuppressant medication to prevent organ rejection and the transplant won’t cure her autoimmune hepatitis, the confusion is ⁣unlikely to return. “I can’t put into words how grateful I am. Now everyone’s back to ‌their normal lives – including me,” she stated.

Multinational Layoffs: Amazon, Nestlé, Verizon Job Cuts Surge

by Priya Shah – Business Editor November 22, 2025

Tech and Consumer Giants Announce Significant Layoffs ⁤Amid Economic Uncertainty

A‍ shift ⁤is underway as companies ‍move from hiring freezes to active workforce reductions. ⁣After years of ‍maintaining payrolls despite economic ⁤uncertainty, major multinationals like Amazon, Verizon,‍ and Nestlé are now announcing ample layoffs in response to a more volatile global⁢ landscape. This environment is characterized by trade⁣ tensions, the impact of ⁣previous tariff policies, and broader economic slowdowns.

Nestlé⁢ is ⁢undertaking a significant restructuring, planning to cut approximately 16,000 jobs globally. ‍While the majority of⁤ these cuts ⁢will affect office-based roles, positions in production and logistics will also be⁣ impacted. This move ⁣is part of a larger efficiency plan aimed at streamlining⁤ internal organization, eliminating redundancies, and speeding ⁢up decision-making.Nestlé is also increasing its savings targets, signaling a focus on cost control rather than aggressive growth.

Amazon is preparing for its largest corporate layoff as 2022,potentially eliminating up to 30,000 office positions – ⁤roughly 10% of its corporate workforce. Affected areas include People Experience and Technology, Operations, ⁤Devices and Services, and Amazon web Services (AWS). CEO Andy‍ Jassy is driving a reduction⁣ in bureaucracy and management layers, ‌utilizing internal ‌feedback mechanisms to implement ⁣operational changes. Amazon acknowledges that increased productivity through⁣ automation and ⁣AI is ‌enabling these cuts. While AWS revenue grew 17.5% in the second quarter to⁢ $30.9 billion, it is currently growing at a slower⁤ pace than competitors Azure and Google Cloud.

Verizon recently joined this trend, announcing a major restructuring under new ⁢CEO dan Schulman. The company plans to reduce its non-union workforce by up to 20%, impacting over 13,000 ⁢employees. This ⁤restructuring aims to simplify the company’s structure, reduce costs, ‍and improve competitiveness following two consecutive quarters of subscriber losses. The cuts will affect retail staff, customer service⁣ representatives, and ‍some executive positions.

Kennedy says he told CDC to change website’s language on autism and vaccines

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor November 22, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Kennedy Directs CDC to Revise Autism & Vaccine Language on Website

WASHINGTON – Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F.Kennedy Jr. has stated he directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to alter its longstanding public stance regarding a link between vaccines and autism. The change, recently implemented on the CDC website, now reads that the claim “vaccines do not cause autism” is “not an evidence-based claim” due to a perceived lack of conclusive studies ruling out a potential connection.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Kennedy acknowledged existing large-scale studies on the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine and those examining the preservative thimerosal have not established a link to autism. However, he asserted gaps remain in the overall body of vaccine safety research. He characterized the assertion of thoroughly tested and determined vaccine safety as “a lie.”

Kennedy, who has a history of publicly questioning vaccine safety and lacks scientific training, explained his decision was prompted by a belief that insufficient high-quality research has been conducted to investigate potential links between autism and vaccines administered during a child’s first year of life. He specifically cited the hepatitis B vaccine and the combined diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine as areas needing further study.

This change has drawn strong criticism from public health experts, doctors, and scientists, who view it as a promotion of misinformation that the CDC has actively combatted for decades. Organizations like the World Health Association and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control continue to maintain that extensive research demonstrates no causal relationship between vaccines and autism.

The CDC’s advisory committee on vaccine policy is scheduled to convene next month to discuss potential revisions to recommendations regarding hepatitis B vaccinations. Kennedy also reported discussing the website changes with Senator Bill Cassidy, who reportedly expressed disagreement with the decision.

Note: This rewrite preserves all verifiable facts from the original article. It focuses on what Kennedy said and did and the reactions to his actions, avoiding any editorializing or speculation about the validity of his claims. It maintains a neutral tone and accurately reflects the data presented in the source text.
