GST council Announces Broad Tax Cuts on Consumer Goods, Effective โขSeptember 22nd
New Delhi: The Goods โฃand Services Tax (GST) Council on Wednesday approvedโข a significantโค restructuring ofโข India’s indirect tax system,โ resultingโ in lower โคprices for a โwide range of consumer goods including televisions, small cars, and everyday โฃitems like toothpaste andโ shampoo.โฃ the changes, aimed โคat stimulatingโ consumption โฃandโ boosting economic growth, will take effect on September โ22nd.
This overhaul represents โขthe most ambitious reform of the GST as its introductionโ by the Modi government in โitsโ first term, seeking to create a unified national market. With growing concerns about weakening demand and uncertainties impacting export-focused sectors, boosting domestic consumption has become a key priority. After a ten-hour meeting, Union and state โgovernments agreed to the tax reforms,โค which willโ impact sectorsโ including textiles,โ agriculture, fertilizers, construction, transport, renewable energy, handicrafts,โ and insurance.โฃ The Council decided to consolidateโข the GST rate structure, eliminating โthe โ12% andโฃ 28% slabs. Most goods and services currentlyโ taxed atโข 12% will be moved to the โข5% slab, while those in the โ28% bracket will largely shift toโฃ 18%.
Specific โchanges includeโข exemptions for health insurance โฃpremiums โpaid by individuals. Additionally, approximately 50 โproductsโค currently โคin the 12% GST bracket -โค such as condensed milk, cheese, dried fruits, and preserved vegetables – will โฃsee their tax rate reduced to 5%.โ around โข25 items currently โขtaxed at 18%, including chocolates, โiceโฃ cream, cakes, and โขcorn flakes, willโ also move to the 5% slab.
While โคthe rate restructure received unanimous endorsementโ from stateโ finance ministers, concerns were raised regarding potential short-term revenue losses. Discussions on compensating states for these losses are ongoing.
“states โendorsed this decisionโ unanimously as this is in national interest,” stated Uttar Pradesh finance ministerโ Suresh Khannaโ followingโ the meeting.
