COVID Vaccination Campaign to Launch as Planned October 14 Despite Rising Cases
PARIS -โค French health authorities announced โtoday they will proceed wiht the planned October 14 launch of โขthe COVID vaccination โcampaign, coupledโค with the annual flu shot, despite recent indications of increasedโ COVID circulation. Officials โขcite โฃcurrent epidemiologicalโ data asโฃ not warranting โฃan acceleration โof the rollout, even as consultations and viral presence in wastewater have risen โin โฃrecent โฃweeks.
The decision impacts approximately โข19 million French residentsโฃ considered at-risk for severe illness from respiratory infections – including those over 65, individuals with chronic conditions, andโค pregnant women – who are โeligible for free influenza vaccination.โ The COVID vaccine remains fully reimbursed for all โฃFrench citizens.the move comes โคas a new variant, dubbed XFG and part of the โOmicron family, emerges, though authorities emphasize it does not currently appear more risky โthan previous strains.
According to ms. Semaille, data โขsuggests stabilization โคin viral load โdetected in wastewater,โ though โคan increase in emergency room visitsโฃ and potential hospitalizations is being monitored. “Inโข wastewater, it’s starting to stabilize,” she reported. โคDidier Lepelletier, Director General of Health in charge of vaccination campaigns, affirmed, “We did not have the arguments on the epidemiologicalโข level to modify โฃthis date of theโ launchโข of October 14.”
Lepelletier sought to allay public concern โregarding the XFG variant,โค sometimes referred to as โ”Frankenstein” on socialโ media. “No panic, the available vaccine is effectiveโฃ on this strain (and) โthere will be โno immune exhaust โฃlinked โto this particular strain,” he stated.
Health officials are strongly encouraging vaccination against both COVID and influenza, particularly given the severity of lastโฃ season’s flu outbreak, which resulted in an estimated 17,000 โdeaths. A new weekly assessment of โCOVID circulation will be released this Wednesday.
