WASHINGTON โ- Cardinal Robertโฃ W. McElroy of Washington has been diagnosed with well-differentiated liposarcoma, a non-aggressive form of cancer, โand is scheduled to undergo surgery November 13, the Archdiocese of Washington announced november 5.
The 71-year-old โcardinal was informed of the diagnosis and โshared โคthe news with priests of the โarchdiocese during their annual convocation the evening of November 4. Liposarcoma is a rare cancer originating in fat cells,โ typically found in the arms,โ legs, and midsection, affecting approximately 1 in 100,000 people in the U.S. annually,and isโ more common in men between theโค ages of 50โฃ and 65.
According โto the Cleveland Clinic, well-differentiated liposarcoma โgrows slowly and is not typically life-threatening,โค with cells appearing more like โnormal โcells under microscopic examination. The archdiocese stated that Cardinal McElroy’s doctors are optimistic about โhis prognosis.
“I am atโข peace โwith thisโ challenge and โhope and believeโข thatโ in God’s grace I โขwill be โขArchbishop โof Washington for many yearsโ to come,” Cardinal McElroy told the priests, requesting their โฃ”prayers and support” and stating his intention to “resume full dutiesโข two weeks after the surgery.”
Cardinal McElroy was installed as the eighth archbishop of โWashington on March 11, โขhaving previously served as the bishop of San Diego from 2015.โข Heโ was appointed by pope Francis โto succeed Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory, who retired in 2019.โ during his installation Mass โขat โthe Basilica of theโค National โขShrine โof โฃthe immaculate Conception, Cardinal โMcElroy called on the faithful โขto be “pilgrims of hope in a wounded world,” urging them toโค see others as “beloved children, sisters and brothers.”
