San Diego State Women’s Soccer Advances to Mountain West Semifinals with 1-0 Victory Over Colorado State
BOISE, Idaho – San Diego State secured a spot in the Mountain West Conference Women’s Soccer Semifinals Sunday night, defeating Colorado State 1-0 in the quarterfinal round. The Aztecs’ late goal and stellar defensive performance propel them forward in the tournament, hosted by Boise State.
The victory marks the second consecutive contest where San Diego State (9-4-6) has won with a game-winning goal in the final eight minutes, following a similar result against New Mexico last Thursday that earned them a tournament berth. They will now face top-seeded Boise State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. PT, with the winner advancing to the Mountain West Championship Final on Saturday.
A tightly contested match saw both teams prioritize defense, resulting in a combined total of just four shots on goal. San Diego State goalkeeper Kailey Carlen proved pivotal, recording three saves throughout the night, including crucial stops in the 5th and 88th minutes.
The Aztecs broke the deadlock in the 84th minute when Charlie Gerson assisted Mia Hambro Svendsen for a decisive goal from the top of the box. Despite Colorado State holding advantages in total shots (9-6), shots on goal (3-1), and corner kicks (5-3), Carlen’s performance secured the shutout - her seventh of the season, tying her for tenth moast in a single season in program history.
Carlen received a yellow card in the 87th minute. The semifinal match against boise State will be played at Boas Soccer Complex and broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
