$17 Billion Copper Mine Project Faces Local Investment Demands
Cloncurry,Queensland – A new copper mine project, poised to inject $17 billion intoโ the Queensland economy,is facing calls for significant โฃlocal โinvestment from the Cloncurry Shire Council. Harmony Gold acquired the project โfrom Canadian copperโฃ Mountain Mining Corporation in 2022 โfor โฃover $300 million, and itโฃ received $20.7 million โคin funding from the state government’s Mount Isa mining acceleration Program last year, intended to โrevitalizeโ the region followingโ the closure of the Mount Isa โCopperโฃ Mine.
The Councilโฃ isโฃ proposing that mining companies undertaking projects exceeding โฃ$50 million โฃinvest โ1% of the project’s total capitalโ value into local housing โคfor staff. Councillor Campbell emphasized the need for long-term community benefits, stating, โ”To see โขgrowth in โour community, toโฃ see new people come toโค town for jobs, and you’re seeingโค thatโฃ long-term โฃbenefit ofโ theโ mineโฆ We’re not just โขbeing leftโฃ with a โgreatโฃ big hole in the ground.”
The projectโ is projected to create 450 jobs, and the Council is โadvocating for at least 30 to 40 of those positions โคto โขbe filled โby residents of โฃCloncurry, reducing reliance on fly-in fly-out workers. “There should be no reason why the company can’t โcome out andโค commit to having their senior superintendents or managers toโค be in town and reap the benefitsโข of having aโค great mine job and living inโค a great community simultaneously occurring,” Cr Campbell said. โคHe questioned what tangible benefits Cloncurry โwoudl receive, adding, “What tangible benefits can Cloncurryโ expect to see from it? That’s my question for the company and โขfor theโ state government.”
However, the project’s timeline remains uncertain, hinging on โthe future ofโ the multi-billion-dollar copperstring power project inโข North Queensland. Harmony Gold chiefโค advancement officer Johannes Van โคHeerden stated inโฃ Mayโข that the company’s board requires “certainty in terms of some โฃof these outcomes” before making a final investment decision. โคHe warned that if CopperString does not proceed โฃasโข planned, the mine โฃwould be โคdelayed while alternative energy solutions โare explored, stating, “Investmentโค needs certainty.”
