Marcos Orders Halt to โFlood Control โขFunds, Launches Investigation into Decades ofโฃ Alleged Corruption
President Ferdinand โคMarcos โJr. has ordered a halt toโ theโ disbursement of funds for floodโค control projects and announced the formation of an independantโข commission to investigate allegations of widespread corruption withinโค the Departmentโข of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).The move comes amid a growing investigationโฃ into irregularitiesโ surrounding infrastructure projects spanning โthe last 21 years, dating back to 2003.
Marcos stated that the allegations reveal a โdeeply entrenchedโ system of โคcorruption, “institutionalized” over two decades. He emphasized that the โคinvestigation will be thorough and willโ spare no one, including political allies. “The truth has to come out,” heโฃ affirmed, adding that the โขfocus will be on identifying and removing the “big fish” – influential individuals – responsible for the alleged irregularities. “If you don’t removeโ the players, you won’t be able to dismantle theโ system,” he explained.
Concurrently, the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, now under the chairmanship of Senator Panfilo lacsonโฃ following a recent leadership change, is preparing โคa “no-nonsense” and “receipt-based” investigation intoโค the claims made by contractors Curlee and Sarah Discaya, who have alleged โthe involvement of โlawmakers and officials in โขcorruptโค practices. lacson intends โขto verifyโ all claims with supporting documentation, โstating he will โnot rely solely on โคtestimonies. Heโฃ plans to examine โขledgers โand vouchers detailing alleged payments to DPWH officials and legislators, and will be vigilant against potentially “selective” testimonies.โข
The Senate investigation will buildโ upon โคthe work of โthe โคprevious โฃcommittee hearings on flood control projects. Lacson clarified thatโ the โคBlue Ribbonโฃ Committee’s work, conducted in aid of legislation, will not conflict with the independent commission formed byโ Malacaรฑang.โ He intends to share any evidenceโค gathered during the Senate probe with โthe commission to support potential prosecutions. He โhas already shared evidence from his first privilege speech with DPWH Secretary Vince dizon.โ
The President’s decision โand the Senate’s investigation signalโค a commitment to addressing long-standing concernsโ about corruption within โฃthe DPWH and ensuring accountability in the use of public โfunds forโข infrastructureโ projects.
