PEORIA HEIGHTS,โ Ill. (WMBD) – hundredsโ participated in the annual Red Sneakersโฃ for Oakley 5K walk and run at Tower Park this morning, demonstrating a โขpowerful โcommitmentโฃ to food allergy โคawareness and โcommunity safety.
The free,family-friendlyโข event provided a safe and inclusive environment for those living with โfood allergies, featuring a โ5K,games,giveaways,and snacks free of theโ Top 9 allergens.
Red Sneakers Peoria is driving a movement to makeโ Peoria an allergy-friendly city, underscored byโฃ theโข impactful story of Shelly LeGere,โ who shared the tragic loss of her daughter, Annie, to an undetected food allergy. LeGere’s advocacy directly resultedโข in Annie’s Law in Illinois, enabling police officers to carry and administer epinephrine in emergency situations.
The law is already making a difference locally.โ red Sneakers โPeoria has facilitated โthe donation of 200 auto-injectors and โคequipped 100 Peoria policeโค officers โฃwith this perhapsโ life-saving medication.
“Our officers are dedicated to protecting the community,โข and now they have the tools to respond to severe โขallergic reactions,” explained Lindsey Spangler, Executive โขDirector of Red Sneakers for Oakley. โฃ”Carrying an EpiPen or auto-injector โคallows them to save โa life when every second counts.”
Spangler confirmed the โขorganization’s ongoing โcommitment to โฃexpanding Peoria’s allergy-friendly initiatives, with a visionโค to replicate the model โขthroughout Illinois and beyond.
