As of ⁣Wednesday,Belmont ​County‍ has⁢ recorded 106 confirmed ​cases of Lyme disease,according to‌ Deputy Health Commissioner Rob Sproul. Data‍ from the ​Ohio Department of Health, current as of July 30, indicates ‍94 confirmed cases ‍within the‌ county, with Jefferson County closely following ⁢at 88.

Statewide, Ohio has reported a total ‍of 1,131 Lyme disease cases so far this year.

Environmental Factors​ and Emerging Tick Species

The rise in cases is attributed, ⁢in part, to‌ the region’s​ lush​ environment.⁣ The abundance of vegetation⁢ provides a ⁣thriving⁣ habitat for white-tailed deer and other animals that serve as hosts for ticks – ‌the vectors responsible for transmitting the bacteria​ that causes lyme disease. Sproul‍ emphasized‌ a concerning trend: the arrival of new tick species in the‍ area, potentially introducing additional diseases.

“We’re‌ seeing ⁣new species move into the area, and with them ​comes the potential for more Lyme ​disease and other‍ tick-borne illnesses,”

Health officials are urging residents to ​remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if‍ they suspect a‌ tick bite ⁤or experience symptoms of Lyme disease.

Homeowners can take steps to reduce tick populations⁢ around ⁢their⁤ properties. Maintaining short ‍grass – 4⁤ inches or less -⁤ creates a less hospitable ‌environment for ⁢black-legged ticks, the primary carriers‌ of Lyme ⁤disease. These ticks prefer‍ hot, dry conditions.

For those living near wooded⁤ areas, establishing a barrier of dry mulch‌ between the woods and the lawn can definitely⁢ help deter ticks. planting aromatic herbs like​ garlic,‍ mint, lavender, and marigolds, known for their strong-smelling⁤ oils,⁢ can also act as a⁢ natural repellent.‍ Removing leaf litter and debris further reduces tick habitats.
