Grillo Jr. Trial Nears โคConclusion: Prosecutor โขand Lawyer Bongiorno Present Closing Arguments
The trial of Alessandro Grillo, Edoardoโฃ Capitta and Vittorio โLauria, accused of group sexual violence against a 19-year-old Italian-Norwegian student and โขan Italian โขfreind, entered its final stages on Tuesday with closing arguments. Prosecutor Gregorio Capasso reiterated his request forโฃ a nine-year prison โsentence for โall four defendants, โคemphasizing โขthe inconsistencies inโ their testimonies. The โฃalleged victims were not present in โcourt, โthough the primary accuser may testifyโ onโฃ Wednesday, when โขa verdict isโ expected.
Capasso argued that the defendants’ accounts of the events of the night between July โข16th and 17th, 2019, at the Grillo familyโค villaโค in Porto Cervo, “adaptedโฆaccording to the inquiry,” while โขthe accuser’sโข statementsโค remained โconsistently unchanged. He urged the court,โค presided over โขby Judge Marco Contu, to recognize this discrepancy as “the real reading โkey” ofโ the case. The prosecutor reaffirmed the charge of group rape and maintained his original sentencing โrequest.
Representing the Italian-Norwegian student as โขa civil party, lawyer Giulia Bongiorno focused on the psychological impact of the alleged violence. She stated her client’sโฃ primaryโ struggle after the evening โคwas “to surviveโ theโ violence.” Bongiorno addressed defenseโ arguments questioning the victim’s behaviour in the โmonths โfollowing the incident, specifically the number of photographs she took. โShe explained that her โclient โคworks in fashion and photographyโฃ is integral โto โฃher profession and passions, questioning whether โa topless photo would necessarily โbe incompatible with โexperiencing trauma.
Bongiorno further elaborated on the โคcommon self-blaming mechanism often exhibited by victims of sexual assault. She explained that her client initially believed โขshe wasโ responsible โfor the events, stating in a voice recording sent to a friendโ theโ day after the incident, “Whatever we did those guys I โขlooked for it.”
The lawyer also highlighted points previously raised by prosecutor Capasso, including the โallegedโข victim’s high alcohol consumption that night โand a discrepancy regardingโ a โขtripโฃ to a tobacconist in Porto Cervo on July 17th. Bongiorno โขstated her โclient never โclaimed to have gone to the tobacconist with the defendants after the alleged assault,a claimโ unsupported by mobile phone data from either the defendants or the accuser.
