Trump Disputes Criticism from Rep. greene โขOver Foreignโข Policyโค Focus,โค Claims Inflationโข is Declining
WASHINGTON (AP) โฃ- Former President Donald Trump publicly rebuked Rep. โMarjorie Taylor Greeneโค (R-GA) on monday, stating sheโ has “lostโ her way” afterโ the congresswoman โcriticized โhis emphasis โon foreign policy โฃissues amidโ ongoing โconcerns about the cost of living. The โexchange highlights a growing tension within the Republicanโค party regardingโ the balance between domestic economic concernsโ and international affairs as Trump prepares to retake office in january 2025.
Greene, a staunch Trump ally, told NBC Newsโ last week that theโ frequent meetings with foreign leaders at the White House were “notโค helping Americans” and urgedโ the former president to prioritize addressing high prices โandโ issues like health insurance premiums. “It’s โขnot reducing the cost of living,” Greene said. “It’s doing nothingโ to solve the problems thatโฃ are really plaguing vulnerable segments of our population, especiallyโ young people.”
Trump defended his โขapproach, asserting that the presidency demands a “worldwide situation” focus. โข”We could have a world that’s on fire,โ where wars come to our โคshores very easily, โคif you hadโ a bad โคpresident,” โhe told โreporters โขin the Ovalโค office, adding โthat he “did not devote aโค lot ofโฃ my โคtime” to foreign affairs duringโค his previous term. He โคexpressed โsurprise atโ Greene’s criticism, suggesting she wasโ “catering โto the other side.”
The disagreementโ comes โas Republicans grapple with โฃeffectively communicating their efforts to addressโ inflation. Recent reports indicate a need for the party do moreโฃ to sell โits โคefforts toโค the wider public.
Trumpโ has consistently attributedโ the initial โsurge in inflation to his predecessor, joe Biden, pointing to the four-decade high in consumer prices reached in June 2022. While inflation โrates did ease following Federal Reserve rate hikes and the resolution of pandemic-era supply chain disruptions, voters remained dissatisfied and elected Trump to a second term lastโ year.
However, inflation has โbegun to reaccelerate since Trump initiated country-by-country tariffs in April. The consumer price index โคrose from an annual rate of 2.3% in April โto 3% inโฃ september. Despite this,Trump maintains an optimistic outlook, claiming,”We now are โat a โvery low point – we’re going to be hitting 1.5% pretty soon.”โ He also stated that food and energy prices are “allโข coming down.”
AAA โreported Mondayโ that the average โgasoline priceโข is $3.07 a gallon, a slight decrease ofโข less than two cents fromโข the previous year.
The exchange between Trump and Greene โunderscores the challenges facing the incomingโ administration asโ it navigates competingโฃ priorities and attempts to โaddress economic anxieties whileโข concurrently engaging on the โglobal โขstage.
