Sarkozy Releasedโข From Prison Pendingโฃ Appeal in Corruption case
PARISโ – Former โFrench President Nicolas Sarkozy has been released from prison โwhile he appeals a conviction for corruption adn influence peddling, a court ruled Monday. The decision comes after Sarkozy appeared โvia video conference โคfrom prison, describing his incarceration as “a nightmare.”
Sarkozy, 70, was sentenced in 2023 to three โฃyears โin prison, โwith โคtwo and a half years โขsuspended,โค after being found guilty of attempting to bribe a magistrate in exchange for information about โa legal case involving him. France’s highest court, โthe Court of Cassation, later upheld the verdict. French law generally favors โrelease pending โappeal unless there isโ a risk of flight, โdanger โขto the public, โคor potential for witness tampering.
During Monday’s hearing, Sarkozyโข maintained hisโฃ innocence, stating, “I will never admit โคsomethingโข Iโ didn’t do,” and insisted he never sought financing from former Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi. He also acknowledged the ordeal of imprisonment, โsaying, “I hadโ never imagined I woudl experiance โprison atโ 70. It’s hard, very โฃhard,” and praised prison โคstaff for their assistance.
The court specifically prohibited โSarkozy from contacting Justice Minister Gรฉrald Darmanin, following criticism of Darmanin’s visit โto Sarkozy inโฃ prison last month as perhapsโข undermining judicial independence.
Sarkozy faces additional legal challenges, including a November 26โ ruling from France’s highest court โregarding โขalleged โillegal financing of his 2012โฃ reelection campaign and an ongoing investigation into โฃalleged โwitness โฃtampering related to the Libya case. Hisโ lawyer, Christophe Ingrain, stated the legal team will now โfocus on preparing for the appeal trial, calling the release a “normal implementation of โคlaw.”
