Tame Impala‘s Kevin Parker Emerges From Self-Imposed Isolation, Collaboration Fuels Creative Renaissance
PERTH, AUSTRALIA – after years largely operating as a solitary musical force, Kevin Parker, the creative engine behind Tameโ Impala, has revealed a collaborative spirit forged through unlikely friendships and high-profile projects. A recent profileโ detailsโค Parker’s journey โฃfrom a fiercely โขindependentโข producer to a sought-after collaborator, marked โคby pivotal relationships with โฃMark Ronson and โฃa surprising connectionโ to rihanna.
Parkerโฃ first gained recognition crafting the psychedelic soundscapes ofโข Tame Impala, initially recording and producing everythingโค himself. โHis breakthrough album, Lonerism,โฃ released in 2012,โฃ charted in a dozen countries, but the process was intenselyโ personal, even leading toโข restrictions on access during โlive performancesโค for longtime collaborator, โฃLawrence.
Aโ shared tour supportingโข MGMT and Kesha brought Parker into orbit with producer Mark ronson. The pairโค quickly bonded over technical details of music production, with Parker sharing a work-in-progress version of Lonerism.Following โa Tame Impala performance at Brixton academy โin October 2012, and a โขstar-studded afterparty, the โtwo conceived a project centered around funk music. “Kevin goes, ‘Man, we should do a project โabout the funk.โ No one’s really putting it down for the funk, and โฃfunk is kind of like a dirty wordโข now,'” ronson โrecalled. “He’s like,’Let’sโ do some shit.'”
This collaboration culminated โฃin a four-day recording session at Royal Studios in Memphis in 2014, while Tame Impala was โstillโข touringโฃ Lonerism. The work laid the foundation for ronson’s 2015 album, Uptownโ Special, featuring the hitโ “Uptown Funk.” Ronson believes their initial conversation inspired the song, and โขwitnessed George Clinton’s enthusiastic โคreaction to their track โ”Daffodils.” Ronson credits Parker with expandingโฃ his โฃunderstanding โฃof production through their work together, stating, “Kevin has said on โฃa number of occasions that coming to work โฃwith usโ on โ Uptown Special was his first time ever collaboratingโฆThat’s โฃlike Jimiโ Hendrix saying, ‘Oh, โyeah, that guyโ gave me my โคfirst guitar pick.’ I’llโค fucking take it.”
Parker’s shift towards collaboration continued in 2016 โwith a surprise request fromโค Rihanna’s โcamp.โ Jodie Regan,Tame Impala’s โmanagerโ since โคbefore the band’s name was established, received a call from Jay Brown of โขRoc Nationโ requesting stems โฃfor Tame โฃImpala’s Currents โtrack,”New Person,Same Old โMistakes,” for inclusion onโ Rihanna’s Anti album. Parker immediately began working to fulfill โฃthe request, demonstrating a willingness to share his music and contribute to other artists’ visions.
These โฃexperiences mark a significant โคevolution for Parker, signaling a new chapter โfor Tame โขImpala and its enigmatic leader, one increasingly defined byโ connection and sharedโ creativity.
