UK Warns Russia It’s Ready to Respond After Spy Ship Detection
LONDON – The United Kingdom has issued a stern warning to Russia following the detection of the yantar, a Russian navy surveillance vessel, in British waters. Defense Secretary Grant Shapps stated the UK is prepared to defend its undersea infrastructure and those of its allies,citing concerns over potential sabotage.
The incident comes as the UK government navigates difficult financial decisions, including potential tax increases and spending cuts to address a multi-billion-pound shortfall, while simultaneously bolstering its defence capabilities in response to escalating global threats from Russia, china, and Iran. This commitment includes a pledge to increase defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product by 2035, comprising 3.5% on core defense spending and 1.5% on supporting infrastructure projects. Last year, the UK allocated approximately 2.3% of GDP to defense.
British officials identify the Yantar as a ship designed for peacetime surveillance and wartime sabotage. The vessel has been tracked by the UK and its allies, with efforts made to deter its operations near British territorial waters. Shapps highlighted the Yantar’s role in a Russian fleet that poses a risk to undersea cables and pipelines,referencing earlier attacks in the Baltic Sea.
This is not the frist instance of the Yantar approaching UK defenses. Following a warning in the previous year, the ship departed UK waters for the Mediterranean. In January, HMS Somerset, a frigate dedicated to homeland defense, monitored the Yantar as it transited the English Channel.
Shapps emphasized the need for the UK to adapt to a “new era of hard power,” citing conflicts in the Middle East, tensions between India and Pakistan, chinese espionage targeting UK democratic institutions, and the ongoing war in Ukraine as justification for increased preparedness.
As part of this effort, the government announced plans to construct at least six new munitions factories across Scotland and Wales, following a £1.5 billion ($2 billion) commitment in June. These facilities are projected to create over 1,000 jobs and ensure a consistent supply of explosives,propellants,and pyrotechnics for the military.
