Sheinbaum commits to continue working to find the 43

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 1, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Mexico City. Ten years after the disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa normal students, the elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, committed to “continue working with the families to be able to reach the truth, justice and continue with the search for the young people.”

In an interview, upon leaving the halfway house, he said that he met with the fathers and mothers of “who, having already entered the government, communicated with me to be able to arrange a meeting.”

Regarding his activities, he reported that on Monday he will be at the transition house at noon and in the evening of that day he will have a dinner with the presidents, prime ministers, and presidents who are coming to the inauguration.

And on Tuesday, she indicated, “Congress (for the investiture ceremony), Palace (National) and Zócalo (ceremony with indigenous peoples, and her first speech as president). “It is the agenda,” he said.

He also noted that this Friday he will announce a “lot of appointments in a press release.” When asked about the spokesperson, he stated that “Paulina (Silva), Alfonso Brito… all those who have worked with me are going to stay.”

He mentioned that he is leaving tomorrow for his last tour with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. “It’s very nostalgic, emotional, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”

On the other hand, Sheinbaum rejected that he had sent an invitation to the princess of Spain, Leonor de Borbón, instead of King Felipe VI, as was speculated.

“None of that, I can assure you.” He said that the president of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, was invited, “but the daughter, the princess, was not invited. That is not correct.”

He also insisted that the work stoppage of the Judiciary workers “is not labor-related. It is a strike that they decided to have, but it has nothing to do with a labor issue. It is not governed by the Federal Labor Law.”

I also trust that the demands of the Aeroméxico pilots will be resolved satisfactorily.

Government disapproves ruling in favor of Odyssey Marine Exploration

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 27, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Mexico City. The Government of Mexico, through the Secretariats of Economy (SE) and Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), reported that it disapproves of the ruling issued non-unanimously by an international court administered by the International Center for Settlement of Relative Disputes to Investments (ICSID), which forces the country to pay compensation of 37.1 million dollars to Odyssey Merine Exploration. Likewise, he announced that he will seek to annul the ruling before the competent courts.

Through a press release, the aforementioned agencies report that after more than two years of having completed the procedure, on September 17, the majority of the court finally issued the award in favor of the company Odyssey Marine Exploration, which requires the country to pay compensation of 37.1 million dollars for having denied permission for the marine dredging project in Baja California Sur (BCS). This figure represents around 1.18% of the amount that the company originally claimed in arbitration.

The SE and Semarnat explained that between 2016 and 2018, Semarnat denied the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) of the project “Dredging of black phosphatic sands in the Don Diego deposit”, for which the Odyssey company initiated international arbitration against of Mexico within the framework of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The work scheduled in the Gulf of Ulloa, in BCS, whose partners included Diego Fernández de Cevallos and Alonso Ancira, consisted of marine dredging, at a distance of 12 nautical miles (22,224 m) from the closest point to the coast in an area of 61,989.2 hectares, in order to extract 7 million tons of phosphate sands annually for 50 years to produce 350 million tons of phosphate sands screened and dried for transportation

In the arbitration process, they detailed, Mexico argued that the project affected an ecologically sensitive place where the loggerhead turtle, gray and blue whales, and sea lions live, among others. Likewise, he provided evidence that demonstrated the company’s lack of experience in the mining sector, since its main activity is the search for marine treasures. Furthermore, it was revealed that the marine dredging techniques that Odyssey wanted to implement had not been put into practice anywhere in the world.

Federal agencies consider that the Court gave disproportionate weight to the statements of two former directors of the General Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk of Semarnat presented as witnesses by Odyssey, who declared that the denial of the MIA was due to political situations and not scientific. For its part, Mexico’s defense demonstrated that both witnesses incurred conflicts of interest by receiving large payments for testifying, which was not taken into account by the majority of the court.

Among the three arbitrators, they specify, there was a dissenting position, which criticized that “Mexico’s reasonable and serious environmental concerns were deliberately ignored by the majority of the court.” Furthermore, he concluded: I cannot help but express the opinion that this unprecedented and disturbing award is novel and innovative in the worst of ways. Due to the serious deficiencies of the resolution, and considering the criticisms expressed by the dissident arbitrator, the Ministry of Economy will initiate a trial to annul the award before the competent courts. Likewise, the Government of Mexico will assert all possible means of defense.

The Government of Mexico reiterates that it will not allow projects that favor minority groups to the detriment of our natural resources to continue being prioritized and will defend its sovereignty at all times for the good of all Mexicans.

The award will be published in the near future on the ICSID website.

AMLO assures that he will retire peacefully and without any pending issues

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 24, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Tinus, Yuc. During a tour of the cars of the Maya P’atal Train, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that he will retire satisfied, grateful to the people, without leaving anything pending and without having failed the people. Meanwhile, the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, said she felt happy.

To the governors who accompanied him on this trip, which began in Cancun and will end in Merida, he said that he does not leave them any advice or recommendations because “they are very experienced men and women, very responsible, aware, with a social dimension, who have a lot of love for the people.”

For this reason, he said, “I am going to retire, or rather, I am going to retire, very peacefully.”

-As a teacher?

Yes, but I’m done now; like all teachers, they also retire.

Although some governors considered this trip to be a farewell, the president said that “I will not be able to see some of them so closely these days.”

But, he said, “we will be seeing each other because we will participate in the ceremony, together, of presenting the Presidential Sash to the woman who will soon be the best president in the world.”

López Obrador explained that three of the 24 leaders of the movement were absent: Rubén Rocha, from Sinaloa, and Miguel Ángel Navarro, from Nayarit, because “they have occupations, they have tasks in their states” and neither was Martí Batres, head of government of Mexico City, present; but his successor, Clara Brugada, was present.

The president said he was “satisfied” ten days after leaving office. “I am grateful to the people, because we have done this together, from the bottom up. Millions of women and men have participated in the transformation of the country.”

-Do you have any pending tasks, do you feel that you have not accomplished anything?

-No, but you know that my critics, my adversaries, answer that question. They have a very long list of our mistakes – he said ironically.

Sheinbaum shouted: “He didn’t fail at anything.”

Earlier, he said that the train is beautiful, as are the Tren Maya hotels. “Everything is wonderful. And also, in the company of the governors, very beautiful!”

The president said goodbye with “a round of applause for the journalists.”

Sheinbaum arrives at the National Palace to meet with AMLO and De la O

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 2, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Mexico City. Eleven minutes before five in the afternoon, President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum arrived at the National Palace where she will meet with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the team from the Ministry of Finance to define, among other things, the public finances for her administration.

The meeting, which will be held behind closed doors in the historic building, will be attended by the Secretary of Finance, Rogelio Ramirez de la O, who was appointed by the next president to remain in office under her administration.

When questioned by reporters awaiting her arrival at the National Palace, the future president avoided giving the names of the members of her team who would be present at this meeting.

Last week, López Obrador announced that this meeting would take place with the aim of defining the budget for the remainder of this year and for 2025, in addition to discussing the fiscal situation, income and public finances.

Upon her arrival, Sheinbaum also did not comment on the impact that the peso’s exchange rate against the dollar suffered today.

Government will not close investigations into Ayotzinapa case

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 1, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Mexico City. The federal government has pledged not to close the investigation into the disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa students who have been missing for almost a decade.

This evening, in a statement with the official position after the meeting that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had this morning with the families of the students, it was detailed that “to break the pact of silence” 19 people have been interviewed, some with interest in participating as new informants.

This is in order to “obtain information that will help us locate members of a criminal group who were released after being allegedly tortured.”

During the meeting with the mothers and fathers of the boys on Tuesday, held behind closed doors at the National Palace, the president reaffirmed that his government’s commitment is to work “every day” until the young men are found, the truth is known and justice is done for them and their families.

He guaranteed that the search for the students will continue until the last day of his administration, September 30; and that the case will not be closed or shelved.

As announced by the parents’ representatives after the meeting, the head of the Executive will send them a final report and if there is any matter of interest, “he will call a new meeting.”

The federal administration’s statement did not provide details on whether today’s meeting was the last with the families, as reported in the afternoon by the victims’ representative, Vidulfo Rosales, who said that there was a virtual break-up due to the lack of progress in the investigations.

The Undersecretary for Human Rights of the Ministry of the Interior and president of the Commission for Truth and Access to Justice in the Ayotzinapa case (Covaj), Arturo Medina, said that the priority is to find the students.

“We will not stop until we exhaust all existing lines of investigation to find the missing youths and provide answers to their families. Our will and capabilities are at your service,” he reportedly told the parents.

He explained that, in coordination with various authorities, two inspections and searches were carried out within the facilities of the 27th Infantry Battalion, located in Iguala, Guerrero – which, it should be noted, were unknown to the majority of parents. The first was carried out from July 31 to August 2, and the other on the 15th and 16th of this month.

Regarding the extradition processes of Tomás Zerón, former head of the Criminal Investigation Agency and sheltered in Israel where he tries to remain a fugitive from justice; and of José Ulises Bernabé, a judge who, according to testimonies, was with a group of missing youths and today has asylum in the United States, the federal official added that work is being done to obtain the extraditions as soon as possible, so that their participation does not go unpunished.
